How are you related to Edward III ?

The Edward III Descendants project and the Edward III Gateway Ancestors project have made Edward a very popular man to be related to.

So to give everyone a space to compare relationships and which lineages you come from, here's a post to celebrate connections to this famous English monarch.

Add your relationship to Edward below either as an answer (preferred) or a comment to this post, and see who else is from the same line. Get chatting to some new cousins!

To recognise and celebrate your relationship to Edward, you can put this sticker on your own profile in the Biography section (to get the Relationship Finder to work). Just copy and paste the following code into your own profile. You will need to replace "Whatever your relationship is" with your real relationship.

{{Relationship Sticker
|image=UK_Flags-47.png
|imagetext=Crown of St Edward
|relationship=Whatever your relationship is
|name=King Edward III
|id=Plantagenet-70
}}

The sticker features the crown of St Edward the Confessor, which is the coronation crown of Great Britain. (Many thanks to Liz Shifflett for developing the code for the sticker).

If you want to follow Edward, you can bookmark his profile to see what changes are being made to his profile. If you are a descendant, you can follow Edward by going into your Family Activity Feed and choosing the Ancestors tab.

Update 1 8 August: For the sticker to work (link to the relationship finder), it has to be in your Biography section.

I would also add that those of us that are descendants of Edward III (he is my 22 great grandfather) are then also a descendant of William I "The Conqueror" and Charlemagne, Holy Roman Emperor since Edward III was the the 6th great grandson of William I "The Conqueror" who was a descendant of Charlemagne.
I believe I am related but need to familiarize myself with my line. I will add the sticker to my profile but if I don’t find it I will delete the sticker. Thank you for adding this post.
If the Relationship Finder shows that I'm a descendant of Edward III, but the relationship hasn't been proved by the Edward II Project, is it still ok to use the Relationship sticker?
I am descended from Edward III through his two sons, John of Gaunt (and his two sons) and Edmund, Duke of York (and his daughter).

23rd great granddaughter however it is uncertain at this time (according to relationship finder).

A few years ago, I joined a lineage society called the National Society of Saints and Sinners, which connects back to many, if not most of, the saints of Europe and the British Isles. If you can trace back to Charlemagne, at least according to the book we use for the society, you also can trace back to St. Gregory the Illuminator, patron saint of Armenia. I don't think he's in this tree yet, but it would be nice to see him there if the research from the book can be proven to be true. He lived in the third century.
I am Edward III's 18th great grandson, through my Virginia line of the Bevilles, supposedly with a total of 17 different pathways. We shall see…
This is interesting as Orthodox priests have always been able to marry. Roman Catholic priests were able to marry until 1123.
18th Great Grandfather. Thank you for the sticker for my profile!
Hello I am very new to this (newg). I have currently found out that I am the 18th great grand daughter of Edward the III, and so forth.  I just read there need to be verification of that and other kings I am descended from. How do I proceed w this information and verification process. Do I need a dna test as well?  Thank you so much for any help and who or where I should properly communicate with.
@Paula: Check your line to Edward III on the relationship finder. Does it all check out or is there a suspicious link in there which may be wrong? That's what we mean by verifying - as a lot of the older trees were uploaded without any sources and may not be quite accurate. If you find that you have a Gateway ancestor (the immigrant to America) that hasn't been accounted for before, then get in touch with the Edward III project in the post above. Any other questions, message me directly.

Jo

PS No DNA test required!
Edward III, II, I are all direct ancestors of mine.

I thought I had remembered there being conditions under which an Orthodox priest can marry. This is from Wikipedia:

"In the Eastern Orthodox Church and Oriental Orthodoxy, celibacy is the norm for bishops; married men may be ordained to the priesthood, but even married priests whose wives pre-decease them are not allowed to remarry after ordination. Similarly, celibacy is not a requirement for ordination as a deacon and in some Oriental Orthodox churches deacons may marry after ordination. For a period in the 5th and early 6th centuries the Church of the East did not apply the rule of celibacy even for ordination to the episcopate."

Hello distant cousin lol Edward III is my 22nd great grandfather too.  There must be lots of us after all those years. x
Hi cuz, I also have Williams in my family.
How interesting,  I have been unable to trace my Williams ancestors beyond my 2nd great grandfather, George Williams, born in England.  That is all I know about him.  Parked that one.

Edward III is my 22nd great grandfather.

Both my paternal and maternal lines go back to Edward III so I told my mom she was related to my dad lol.  I am bad sometimes.
Okay this is quite helpful and informative! Thank you so much!
My great-great grandmother was Nancy Williams, born 1812 TN. I have her parents as Joseph and Nancy Colyer. I haven’t vetted that information.  She married George Ikard.

My mother’s and father’s  ancestors married into each other lines a few generations ago too.

I’ll need to check my relationship to Edward III. I deleted some lines as I did not have proof. I’m waiting on my brother’s DNA to check on certain lines.
19th great grandson.
Direct descendant of Edward III
I'm his 18th great granddaughter
I am a direct descendant of King Edward III. He is my 22nd Great Grandfather.
19th direct great grandfather
I told my grandparents that they were related to each other, and I continue to point out my families distances between each other as cousins. It is kind of interesting to see their responses.
I agree, Some one did something like this on Facebook, and there were a lot of answers. Some one even asked if every one in the USA was related to Royalty.
My multiple times great grandfather Richard Coles married Ursula Plantagenet, Ursula's father was Richard Platagenet Duke of York and Richard Plantagenet is descended from Edward III.

His tree consists of Edward I, II, III, Henry I, II, III, King John etc.

Me too! Hello cousin! smiley

I'd hope so because my 2nd great grandfather was a Greek Orthodox Priest. He had a bunch of children. I did take a tour of an Greek Orthodox Church last summer and the priest did mention that they had to make that choice before they became a priest if they were getting married or not.
19th Granddaughter is the closest but also a 21st.  I can't get the sticker to work I tried everything.
Hello back cousin nice to meet you.
I am Edward III's 19th great-granddaughter.
I have tried everything as well to get a sticker, so I understand your frustration  lol.
I finally figured it out. I think I’d copy and pasted it wrong but I put it in the biography section on my profile page and it worked!

Congratulations on being the first to post Sandra! I hope you will put the sticker on your profile with pride!
There's an uncertain connection in the line. I will see if I can prove things before I use the sticker. :)

He is my 18th great grandfather.
by Michelle May G2G3 (3.6k points)
We also have 41 paths between us.
Hi Michelle - thanks for using the sticker! - it seems for everyone else to see your descent from Edward, you have to have the sticker in your biography section. I'll add that to the sticker instructions above.
How wonderful.. he is my   18th grandfather as well through James Leslie. But there are  8 other paths as well which is interesting.

He and I are first cousins 21 times removed!

Looking at the path between us on the relationship finder, one or two of the profiles are lacking good contemporary sources. I will see if I can find reliable sources to strengthen those particular links in the chain smiley

If you find any discrepancies Nic, will you let Joe Cochoit know for his Edward III Gateway Ancestors project?

Edward III is shown as my 20th to 22nd great-grandfather, depending on which path I choose. The recent updates to the Relationship Finder show me there are 16 paths between him and me.

There are lots of paths to choose from, and to research and validate. I should have a closer look at the one through Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury and her son Henry Pole, Baron Montagu -- my 15th great-grandmother and 14th great-grandfather -- who were both beheaded on Tower Hill for their supposed involvement in a plot to overthrow Henry VIII.

My siblings and I are the 15th great grandchildren of Edward the 3!

At a family event in 2017, we had 13 descendants including 15th, 16th and 17th great grandchildren.

I don't have it entered on WT yet, there are a lot of in between generation profiles to enter first.
by M Ross G2G6 Pilot (758k points)

Looking forward to seeing the line M. If you find a new Gateway Ancestor, don't forget to tell the Edward III Gateway Ancestor project about it.

There is one problem, which of 3 cousins was the father of the 10th great grandfather, all of them are descendants of Edward so the connection is there, they all had children named Ralph born within 3 years of each other, some more detective work to do!

I am the Gateway Ancestor, the only branch that emigrated and that was in the 1960s.

His grandfather King Edward I is my 21st great - grandfather (Queen Leonor of Castilla being my 21st great - grandmother) so he is my 19th great - grand uncle, not exactly direct line, linked through his father Edward II.

But at least Edward I is direct line and linked through WT.
