According to a document of St Mary's Abbey York, the Bowes family descend from William Bowes (in Latin: Guillermus Arcubus). He got his name because he was an officer in charge of 500 archers. He was a kinsman of Alan Rufus, in whose Richmondshire lands Bowes Castle was built.
