The Pony Express began on 3 April 1860. Delivering messages, newspapers, mail, and small packages using mounted riders rather than traditional stagecoaches from St. Joseph, Missouri using a series of relay stations, ultimately to Sacramento, California. The service would end in October 1861, with the advent of the transcontinental telegraph. U.S. National Archives - public domain photo.
