Biography

Dorothy Burgess (alternately spelled Burg, Burge, Burgis), daughter of Joseph and Patience (Freeman) Burge, was born 12 November 1670, at Sandwich in the Plymouth Colony.[1] Dorothy's father Joseph was instrumental in founding the town of Sippican, now Rochester, in 1679.[2] It was probably there that Dorothy married Savory Clifton prior to 1690.[3]

The 1695 will of Joseph Burgess named his daughter "Dorrity" Clifton leaving her 20 shillings. She also benefited from land transactions as a result of his estate. 17 March 1714/5 the children of Joseph Burge of Rochester, late deceased relinquished and discharged to their brother Benjamin Burge, all their right in land which had belonged to their father. This deed was signed by Savorill [sic] Clifton, Dorothy Cliftion (mark), Edward Rose (mark), Rebecca Rose (mark) and Ichabod Burge. [4] 10 April 1725 Patience Burge of Rochester (Dorothy's mother), widow of Joseph acquitted and discharged to Benjamin Burge (er son) and her daughter Dorothy, the wife of Clifton Savory, her "right in a share of land in Middleboro, which was formerly in the right of Governor Prence ... I am heir to a part of the same." [4]

Dorothy and Savory remained in Rochester and raised a family of at least eleven children there. [4] The Cliftons were closely allied with the Wing family and together they were founders of the Quaker movement in Rochester.[2]

Dorothy Clifton died probably in Rochester, after April 10, 1725 (deed) and before June 1, 1727 (deed)[4]

Burge-1140 and Burgess-989 appear to represent the same person because: I failed to search for this woman as "Burgess" and didn't find the previous work (Burgess-989) before I created Burge 1140. My original intent was to hook up daughter Patience Clifton (Clifton-2497) to Savory and Dorothy (Burgess) Clifton.
