Biography

James Hatch Senior was born 18 Jul 1756[1] in Preston, New London, Connecticut.[2] He was the son of Jeremiah Hatch and Abigail (Rich) Hatch.[3]

He married Esther (Tucker) Hatch, 10 Jan 1782.[1] The couple had children Mary, Lucy, James, Esther, Ruby, Sally, John, Clarissa(?), Ezra, Reuben, Philinda, [1]

James passed away 30 Nov 1831[1] in Halifax, Windham, Vermont, United States.

The following information was originally entered as a biography for James Hatch when it was entered on 27 Nov 2018. It was subsequently found to have been information regarding James Hatch Sr., so it is included here so as not to be lost.

James Hatch, Sr, (or James Hatch Esquire, as it appears on most records), and his wife, Esther (Tucker), perhaps made several moves within the state of Massachusetts. They spent their later years in Halifax, Vermont, which is located between Marlboro and Readsboro. He is buried there in the old ‘Stacy cemetery, having died on November 30, 1831 in his 76th year.’

James purchased 136 acres of land in Halifax on October 22, 1790 from Joseph Shillings, moving his family to Vermont. Shortly after their arrival in Halifax, James purchased another 70 acres of land from Jonathan Rich for which he paid 150 pounds.

Since it is believed that the family was living in Massachusetts in the mid 1780’s, they apparently did not live in Canaan, New York too long, perhaps three years at most. Canaan records, however, reveal a Daniel Hatch and an Alanson Hatch locating in Canaan about this time and of about the same age of James. They may have been cousins, or even brothers. Descendants of these two families continued to reside in the Canaan area for many years as farmers and wagon makers and, in fact, descendants are probably still able to be found there today.

The 1790 Census indicates that James and Esther may have had at least five children: two sons (James and Ezra) and three daughters.[4]

Research Notes

Recent discovery of a very old family bible leads us to believe that the son, James Jr., is one and the same as Hatch-3958. That would make this James Hatch Sr. the son of Jeremiah Hatch. When originated, this profile indicated that James Sr. was the son of Thomas Hatch based on the research findings of Larry Krug in his otherwise-accurate-and-wholly-informative book "Bates-Dyson-Hatch Families," self published in 1983. His works were exhaustively researched over 30 years, long before the Internet made research possible without visiting Vital Records Depositories.

Research concluded that the above are the proper lineage. If you have a primary source document that will shine light on this, please let us know.
