John Whitmarsh immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
John was the son of John Whitmarsh and his second wife, Alice Garment.[1] Records for Shepton Mallet, Somset., England record his baptism on March 7, 1623/4.[1] A surviving passenger list for the Marygould dated March 20, 1634/5 lists the Whitmarche family as passengers, specifically, it mentions John as Jmo. Whitmarcke ... aged 11.[1]
"Administration on the estate of John Harding, late of Weymouth, deceased, was granted to John Whitmarsh in right of his wife, only child of said Harding, 31 Oct. 1682. He was a housewright. He served
in King Philip's War in Capt. William Torrey's Company, 1675.
He made his will 22 May, 1695, and it was proved 15 Dec. 1709.
In it he mentions his eldest son John, his son Ebenezer, his son
Zachariah, if he returns from sea, his son Ezra, his daughters Sarah,
Mary, Deborah, Judith Shaw and Ruth; son Ezra Whitmarsh to
be executor. Friends Edward Bates and Joseph Dyer, overseers.
If son Zachariah should miscarry, as my son James did, and not
come home, his part to be divided betwixt my three grandchildren,
Joseph Petty, John Bates and Richard Whitmarsh. (Suffolk Probate.
17:70.)"[3]
Marriage
John married Sarah Harding, the only child of John Harding.[1][4] Anderson, in his profile for John's father in Great Migration 1634-1635, states that John and Sarah were born "by 1655", based on the earliest recorded birth of one of their children (son John on August 23, 1655).[1] Since, however, daughter Sarah's first child was born in 1672,[5] it is highly probably that she was John and Sarah's first-born child and was probably born about 1653, which suggests that John and Sarah were probably married about 1652.
Children
John and Sarah had the following children (some confirmed by Weymouth Vital Records and *"copied from an old quarto book which is now lost"). Several daughters were unrecorded in the Weymouth records but were named in John's will. According to "Corrections and Additions to Savage's Genealogical Dictionary," John Jr. married Sarah, daughter of John "Harden," and they had "twelve or more children."[6]
Sarah Whitmarsh was not recorded in the vital records but she and a grandson Joseph "Piti" [Pettee] were named in her father's 1695 will. Born probably about 1653, based on first child born in 1672. (See discussion and sources in Sarah's profile.)
Mary Whitmarsh was not recorded in the vital records but was named in in her father's 1695 will.
Deborah
Elizabeth
Ruth Whitmarsh was not recorded in the vital records but was named in her father's 1695 will.
A child was born Aug 14, 1663[13] who was probably one of the these daughters. John's sons were named in order in his will, the daughters were named as such: Sarah, Mary, Deborah, Elizabeth, Judith, Ruth.[14]
Will & Death
John Whitmarsh, of Weymouth, made a will on 22 May 1695. He mentioned no wife. He made bequests to sons John, Ebinezer, Zarkeriah (currently at sea), Ezra (whom he named executor). He made bequests to daughters Sarah, Mari, Deborah, Elizabeth, Judah and Ruth. He mentioned that if son Zarkeri should miscarry as did his son James, his share should be divided among grandchilren Josph Piti, John Bate and Richard Whitmarsh.

I'm descended from four children of John and Sarah: Ebenezer, Ezra, Mary, and Judith. Descendants of these families moved to western MA, Ohio, and MI, settling in some of the same places and sometimes remarrying. Some of the descendants of their eldest cousins Deborah and Hannah (Whitmarsh) Shaw also followed the same path to the same places. Most were members of the Congregational churches where they re-settled.
