Biography

Willem was baptized in the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam on 2 August 1648, recorded as the child of Abraham Willemszen. Witnesses were Jan Willemszen Van Amsterdam, Jan Dirckszen Van Amsterdam, Grietie Hermans, and Mary Geeraer. [1]

His parents were Abraham Willemsz van Amsterdam and Aechtje Jans van Norden. His father died when Willem was very young, thus he was reared in New Amsterdam by his mother and step-father Pieter Casparszen van Naarden. [2]

He was a blacksmith, as seen in various deeds.[3]

Around 1668 [age c. 20] he moved up the Hudson River and overland to Schenectady, a stockaded village on the Mohawk River. He married Neeltje [Cornelia] Swart, daughter of Teunis (Anthony) Cornelisz Swart and Lysbeth van der Lindt, in Schenectady in about 1670.

On February 8 1690 the French and their Indian allies burned the town, killing and capturing villagers. They escaped to Albany. On September 8 1690 in Albany he witnessed the baptism of Aefje, daughter of his half-sister Engeltje Abrahams and Jan Janszen.[4]

Willem chose to relocate down the Hudson River at Kingston, apparently joining his wife’s siblings. On June 7 1694 daughter Helena was baptized in the Kingston Dutch church.[5]

Around 1698 he moved inland to the Minisink [Port Jervis] on the Delaware River in Orange Co. NY. "being known by the friendly Indians, he was invited by them to take up his residence in the Minisink country, the Indians voluntarily granted unto him a tract of land situated and being at Maghaghkemek, named and known by the name of Schaikaeckamick, in an elbow; that he obtained license to purchase Oct 15 1698, that he so purchased."[6]

In 1713 he moved back to the Hudson River, settling in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess Co. NY. As William Titsoor, blacksmith of Orange Co. he purchased land with a home on it in Poughkeepsie Apr 25 1713.[3]

He died in Poughkeepsie on October 20, 1722.[7] His will dated December 11 1716 was probated Oct 29 1722.[8][9] The will, as variously transcribed, named children Abraham; Stefanus/Stephanus; Jacob; Isaac; Elizabeth, wife of James Witte (?), Eghie/Eytie, wife of Abraham Freer; Rebecca, wife of Jurean/Jurian Quick; Helena, wife of Damon/Daman Palmetier; Areiantie/Ariantie, wife of Jacob van Kuykendal and her dau. Maragrieta/Margareta; and Marya Titsoor.

Tietsort-41 and Abrahamsz-7 appear to represent the same person because: They have same birth and death dates. The difference in surnames is due to their being Dutch.
Tiestsoort-2 and Abrahamsz-7 appear to represent the same person because: This is the oldest paternal ancestor in this chain in need of a merge into the patronymic NNS PPP. No tree conflicts. Thanks!
