Biography

Samuel Allen was born in Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony, 8 January 1631/2,[1][2] the son of William Allen and his wife, Ales _____. In. 1645, William Allen testified, "My sonn Samuell bo. 8th of 11 mo. 1631 by Als my wyfe."[3][4] Samuel's mother died about two months after his birth. His father remarried and removed from Salem to Manchester, where Samuel was raised, and where he died after 21 November 1702 (date of will) and before 15 October 1709 (date of inventory),[5] probably closer to the later date.

Samuel married, probably in Salem or Manchester, by 1663 (birth of child), Sarah _____.[6] Her birth and parentage are unknown. Some report she was Sarah Tuck, but there is no evidence for this.[7] Sarah was born about 1639 (she would have been about age 24 at the birth of her first chiild, and about 45 at the birth of her youngest). She probably died in Manchester after 10 December 1710, for on that date, "ye land of ye widow Sarah Allin" was described as bounding property being devised to her son, Joseph, from her husband's estate.[8][9] Samuel may have had an earlier wife. See Research Notes.

He was active in civic affairs at Manchester, though the earliest records are incomplete. In 1659, he was town constable.[10] Samuel served as Selectman in 1676, 1677,[11] 1680, 1690 and 1694. Also in 1674, as on 23 November 1674 he was among the selectmen of Manchester who reported they had informed "famelyes" about "Laws of the General Court" requiring all "children and youth ... be taught to read perfectly the English tongue ..."[12] Samuel moderated a town meeting in 1693. He was a member of different town committees for laying out lands and highways, to build a meeting house and making arragements for the services of a minister, all between 1685 and 1700.[13]

On 25 November 1679, Samuel testified in the matter of Robert Knights, sr.. v. Onesiphorus Allen and Samuell Leach. "Samuell Allin, aged about fifty years, William Allin, aged about thirty-three years, and Robert Leech, aged about twenty-seven years, testified that the wood was cut in Manchester." A verdict was granted in favor of the defendants.[14]

Samuel Allen was a housewright and significant property owner.[15]

Will and Probate

Samuel made his will on 21 November 1702, reporting he was "about seaventy and four years of age being of sound memmory." The will names various various family members. It was disallowed and on 5 December 1709, Samuel Allen, Jr. was appointed administrator.

The inventory of the estate was made 15 October 1709 by John Siblee and John Knowlton, sworn 9 January 1709[/10]. A committee of Robert Leach, John Ley and John Knowlton was appointed to divide the estate real property. Their report, dated 10 December 1710, made a division of property to Samuel's ten children.[16]

Family

According to Raymond Frederick Allen, Samuel and Sarah (_____) Allen had ten children, born in Manchester; many baptized in Salem, where he and Sarah were members,[17]

  1. Samuel Allen, Jr., born 4 August 1663,[18] baptized in Salem, 28 October 1665,[19] died about 1744; married in Marblehead, 17 March 1686/7, Abigail Williams;[20] nine children.
  2. John Allen, born 12 February 1666 (double dating not indicated);[21] died in 1737; married (1) Elizabeth _____; married (2) in Manchester, 8 December 1727, Margaret (Stilson) Hilton;[22] ten children said by first wife; one by second.
  3. Sarah Allen, born 12 March 1668 (double dating not indicated);[23] married in Marblehead, 4 December 1684, William Hassam of Marblehead.[24]
  4. William Allen, born 18 March 1670 (double dating not indicated),[25] baptized in Salem, 4 September 1670,[26] died in Windham, Connecticut, 13 or 15 December 1747;[27] married (1) in Salem, 13 March 1694/5, Elizabeth Small;[28] married (2) Mary _____.[29]
  5. Joseph Allen, born 26 June 1672;[30] died 17 August 1727;[31] married (1) in Manchester, 28 October 1696, Catherine Leach[32] (born 1 October 1680; died 1711); married (2) in Beverly, 20 January 1712/3, Sarah Knowlton,[33] who survived to become his widow; seven children by first wife; four by second.
  6. Alice Allen, born 20 September 1674;[34] married Daniel Williams of Manchester. (See Alice Allen and Daniel Williams.)
  7. Rachel Allen, born 19 February 1677 (double dating not indicated);[35] married 14 June 1715 to Samuel Hutchinson of Windham, Connecticut.
  8. Elizabeth Allen, born 18 March 1679 (double dating not indicated).[36] (Raymond Frederick Allen believes she is the woman who married 3 February 1725-6 to Robert Leach, Jr.)
  9. Benjamin Allen, born 4 June 1681,[37] baptized in Salem, 2 October 1681.[38] (Raymond Frederick Allen provides continuing information.)
  10. Jonathan Allen, born 4 September 1684,[39] baptized in Salem, October 1684,[40] died 4 December 1768;[41] married 1709 to Mary Pierce; twelve children born Manchester.

Manchester town records include a report of 13 children born to "Samuel Allen and Sarah his wife," but there is an 18 year gap between the birth of the tenth child, Jonathan (as above), and the next child. Without further explanation, the additional three children seem an error in the town account.[42]

Research Notes

Birth. In 1645, Samuel's father testified that this son was born 8 : 11 mo. :1631 [8 January 1631/2]. Separately Samuel gave his age as 50 in 1679,[43] and as about 74 in 1702.[44]

First wife? In the matter of William^1 Allen's estate, his widow testified about bequests and earlier gifts to Samuel^2 Allen, including items "at ["Sonne Samuell"]'s "first mariadg."[45] Referring to this testimony, Donald Lines Jacobus wrote (1945), "The testimony of [William's widow] indicates that Samuel^2 was twice married, and we surmise that he married first in the 1650's and soon lost this wife."[46]

Errors in print. In 1935, Raymon Meyers Tingley published an account reporting Samuel^2 and two of his sons had married a Sarah Tuck of Beverly. Of this notion, Jacobus (1945) wrote, "This we doubt." About the 1935 work, Jacobus continued, "Mr. Tingley also kills off Samuel's son, our ancestor, William^3, at Manchester on 29 December 1696, but [then] correctly assigns this date of death to William^2, brother of Samuel."

See Raymon Meyers Tingley, Some ancestral lines : being a record of some of the ancestors of Guilford Solon Tingley and his wife, Martha Pamelia Meyers / collected by their son (Rutland, Vt. : Tuttle Publishing Co., 1935), 10-20 (Allen); digital images, Hathi Trust. Then also, Donald Lines Jacobus, The Granberry family and allied families ... (Hartford, Conn., E. F. Waterman, 1945), 148 (Samuel^2 Allen) at 148n; digital images, Hathi Trust.

Erroneous FindAGrave memorial. As of 2023, the FindAGrave memorial about Samuel reports he was born at Beverly, thirty years before the town was formed; says he both died and was buried at Beverly, though he lived most of his life at Manchester and was "of Manchester" when he wrote his will. His wife there is "Sarah Tuck." See Samuel Allen, memorial 183475381 (only); web content, FindAGrave, reports his burial at Abbott Street Burial Ground, Beverly, maintained by Jo W. (contributor 48017095). No tombstone image or reliable source appears.

No notice of Samuel's burial at Beverly was found in "Beverly Inscriptions: Ancient Burying Ground," The Essex Antiquarian, 3 (1899): 1-7 (see otherwise, 4), 31-32, 38-42, 56-61, 77-79, 90-94; digital images, Hathi Trust. Note: Not all the pages are legible in sequence; unless otherwise indicated, continue scrolling for duplicate scanned images that are legible.

Salem Baptisms. In 1958, Raymond Frederick Allen reported that "many" of Samuel's children were baptized at Salem, providing details for the baptisms of Samuel, Benjamin and Jonathan. Donald Line Jacobus (1945) asssociated another with son William. There is one other Allen baptisms appearing in the Salem vital records that may relate to this family. See Joseph Allen 1672 baptism, citing "church record, First Church," Vital Records of Salem, Massachusetts to the End of the Year 1849, 6 vols. (Salem, Mass., The Essex institute, 1916-1925), 1:35 (Allen); digital images, HathiTrust, "[Allen] Joseph, s. –––––, bp. Oct. ––, 1672."

Allen-14516 and Allen-2428 appear to represent the same person because: Raymond Frederick Allen, The Allens; from William Allen (1602-1679) of Manchester, England, and of Salem and Manchester, Massachusetts, in the direct line of descent through Nathaniel Allen (1744-1789) of Beverly, Massachusetts, and Sedgwick, Maine, to Lt. I know what you mean. However, I don't have many pictures. I have to make do with maps, categories, and the like. Much of my career has been spent on making up other peoples' flyers, emails, etc. It does add color and interest to profiles. I am looking into brushing up on my HTML skills and learning WikiCode. Talk to you later.
We don't all approach the work in the same way.

Some like folks to add pictures and backgrounds.

I'm among those who wishes we had the time to complete profiles about all the children and add the many, many relevant historical records (ala, deeds and other historical materials) about this fellow and his family.

Samuel's profile is looking very nice. Could we add pictures or some background?
Daughter Alice Allen is Allen-14515. (Unmerged match entered about father)

Mother's name is disputed.

This should probably be resolved before merges are processed.
