Notes

Note N12Maggies birthdate, place and parents names are confirmed through the Scots Origins (GRO) database.
Robert and Margaret's marriage certificate also backs up her age, residence and parents names, as well as the marriage details. She was married in 1888, aged 22, when she lived at 38 Eglington Street, Beith. Both her parents are confirmed dead when she married.
Maggies birth certificate also backs up her birth date, place and parents names.
The 1871 census finds Margaret living at 18 Whang Street, Beith. She is listed as Margaret Anderson, aged 5, born in Neilston, Renfrewshire. Living with her were mother Jane Anderson, aged 46, widowed 17 months before, occupation Shopkeeper, and sister Eliza, aged 13, born in Dalry, Ayrshire.
She can also be found in the 1881 census, living with her mother at 38 Whang Street, Beith, occupation Dairy Maid. The census data confirms her age and birthplace.
Maggie is also on the 1891 census, aged 25, living in Beith, with her husband Robert (27) and their son David (1). They then lived at 38 Eglington Street, Beith. Maggies profession is down as a "Retailer of Milk".
Maggie and family are also found on the 1901 census, living at 37 Glengarnock, Dalry parish. The census records above their address the words "beginning of Glengarnock village", so the house must have been on the outskirts. The family listed include Robert (37), Maggie (35), David (11), James (9) and Robert (7). The census data confirms their ages and places of birth. Robert is listed as joiner - employer which presumably means he was self-employed. Maggie is listed as wife so presumably she had stopped working by this point and was looking after the family (NB my grandfather William was to be born 2 months later). The house is described as having 4 rooms with one or more windows.
The 1911 census finds Maggie and her family living at Braefoot, Glengarnock. Maggie is described as wife, aged 45, born in Neilston, Renfrew.
Also in the house are:
Robert Craig, Head of House, aged 48, married, occupation Joiner (and employer), born in Beith, Ayrshire;
David Craig, son, aged 21, single, occupation Engineer's Fitter, born in Beith, Ayrshire;
James A Craig, son, aged 19, single, occupation Joiner, born in Beith, Ayrshire;
Robert Craig, son, aged 17, single, occupation Invoice Clerk, Steelworks, born in Beith, Ayrshire;
William Craig, son, aged 9, scholar, born in Glengarnock, Ayrshire;
Agnes Craig, daughter, aged 1, born in Glengarnock, Ayrshire. (NOTE the age is clearly wrong - should be 8!)
The census also confirms that Robert and Maggie had been married for 22 years and had 6 children, 5 of whom were still alive. The house had 4 rooms with windows.
Maggie was principal executer of her late mothers estate. Her signature is on the inventory or articles left behind by her late mother in the Dairy, Beith.
Fifteen £1 shares of the Dunlop Gas Light Coy were passed to her on her mother's death - we have the original manuscript for the transfer. Signatures of immediate family members are included. Aunt Nancy (Agnes Marshall Craig) left a page from a 1985 "Auld Kirk News" giving details on how Kilbirnie was the first town in Scotland with "Gas Light".
The transfer manuscript reads :

NOTE : some background on Gas Light is given in Aunt Nancys Old Parish Newsletter extract dated August 1985
On 13th December 1887, Maggie bought a burial plot, no. 115, in the new burial ground for the Parish of Beith. We have the original paperwork. She was only 21 at the time, and must have been a good forward thinker and planner. Her husband, Robert, bought the adjacent plot, no. 116, on 2nd September 1938. We also have the original paperwork for this. For details of the inscription on the stone, see "notes" for her husband, Robert.
