Biography

Fielding served in the Black Hawk Indian War in 1831-1832. Serving with him were his brother Frederick and their 1st cousins, the Smith brothers, as well as other relations. The Atchisons were Sgts and the Smiths were officers. Fielding was 3rd Sgt in Capt. Samuel J. Kinkead's Co, 1st Regt of mounted volunteers, then under Capt. Jacob Fry's Co, also with Capt. Samuel Smith's Co. (1st cousins). "IL History Collection, Vol XXV, on the Black Hawk War."

Fielding was married in Morgan Co and then moved to Schuyler Co, IL where his 1st 4 children were born. After 1842 it appears they moved to Delaware Co, Iowa, where the last two sons (twins) were born.

Julia's grandfather fought for Andrew Jackson at New Orleans in the War of 1812. He had 19 children. His father and brother were British Tories in the Revolutionary War.

On 7/4/1837, Fielding bought 40 acres in Schuyler Co, Sec 11, Twp 03 N, Range 03 W, 4th Meridian, at $1.25 an acre, for $50, from archives Vol 698. In the "History of Schuyler & Brown Counties, IL, 1882", on Kentucky Ancestors, (it reads erroneously): "Fielding Atchison, b KY, son in law of Nicholas Pyle, b KY. (it goes on to say) Nicholas Pyle, a Kentuckian, with wife and family built a cabin, made some improvements and acquired a preemption right to the South East quarter of sec. 10, but soon moved away.

Fielding with wife and several children came with Pyle, his father-in-law, and in company with his brother-in-law William Pyle, then unmarried, improved the North East Quarter of Sec 10, which Pyle afterwards entered, but subsequently sold & went to KS." (Records show it was Fielding & wife who sold that land in an 1840 land sale, although Fielding's name is written as Phielden Atchinson. Which is correct?)

Fielding evidently went to California after arriving in IA, because there are papers from Deleware Co, IA records showing he had been in Butte Co, CA and had agreed to bring back $200 for another man's father in WI.

He was about to leave for IA on 18 Feb 1852. The other man's name was C. Tyler. In IA, 5 Mar 1852, Fielding bought 40 acres for $50 in Sec 12, Twp 90, near Wood, by the Deleware/Clayton Co border. On 21 July 1852, he bought land from Frederick Slaw of Philadelphia, PA for $100. This was another part of Sec. 12, containing 80 acres.

9 Dec 1863, Julia sold 40 acres for $150 and another for $5, sold a piece of land so as to include a certain spring. At this sale, Wesley & William were under age, their interest stated in a note, while the other children & their wives had to sign the papers. Julia had asked the court if Benjamin Pyle had been appointed her guardian in one legal paper. Her brother, his wife & family are in the 1856 IA Census, Elk Twp, Deleware Co, Iowa.

Fielding died after July 1852, when he had a land deal. His death can not be found. His wife & children are found in 1850 & 1860 in Deleware Co, Iowa Census, 1870 in Clayton Co, Iowa, North Beuna Vista Twp in 1880 Census. His name is spelled Fielding, Fielden, Phieden & Phielding in various documents.
