Aged 84 Years
I bow before thee in the dust
And through my Saviour's blood alone
Look for mercy at thy thrown
I leave the world without a tear
Save for the friends I love so dear.
Siblings: William Henry Bailey (1798-1865), George Bailey Cox (1805-1820).
John was the eldest of the two sons of William Bailey and Ann Archer and was born at Windsor in 1797. It has been said that John was the first white settler on the MacDonald. He had apparently swum across the Hawkesbury in search of land most suitable for a farm. He had very few tools when he began; an axe and a hoe. He could not write, but he was a smart, hard-working, good man. He was approx. 6' 3", with long arms and legs. In the first early days before the arrival of his family, John would make his campfire at night, and then retire quietly some distance away to a drain in which was a hollow log, in which he slept to avoid spears thrown by the aborigines. Each morning he would emerge from the log and count and pull out the spears sticking in the ground around the ashes of the campfire. Trouble ceased with the aborigines when he was forced to shoot one of them. John cleared the land by day and kept his long-barreled muzzle-loading gun ever handy. After clearing some land and erecting a bark hut, John brought his family and his aged parents to live with him as soon as he could.
