Biography

Flag of Nottinghamshire (adopted 2011)
Masakiell Barnard was born in Nottinghamshire, England.

Masakiell Barnard was christened on 27 Sep 1607, in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England.[1]

He is the son of Richard Barnard and Mary Wickhorne. [2] His father was a prominent Puritan clergyman.

Masakiell and his family traveled with the "Hull Company", a group of settlers lead by the Rev. Joseph Hull, who settled in Weymouth after reaching New England. (See below.) They are listed as follows:

  • Musachiell Bernard of Batcombe, Clothier of the County, Somerset, aged 24 years.
  • Mary Bernard, his wife, aged 28 years.
  • John Bernard, his son, aged 3 years.
  • Nathaniel, his son, aged 1 year.

Masakiell is listed as holding several parcels of land in Weymouth in 1643, but is not listed in any later records, suggesting he returned to England shortly thereafter.[1]In 1666 he was living in London; a colonist from Rhode Island said he left a letter "with Mr. Barnard, wo, as you know, is Mr. William's wife's brother."[3]
