Biography

Joseph Bourg is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana, on Plaque 7 Right, La Bergere arrivee Le 15 Aout 1785. Listed with Joseph is his spouse, Marie Magdelene Granger, and their children, Sebastien Joseph, Jean Baptiste, Marie Josephe and Elisabeth Granger; and two nieces, Luce and Margueritte Daigle.[1]

Joseph Bourg was born about 1733 in Cobequit, Acadie, Nouvelle-France. His parents were Abraham Bourg (~1678 - >1733) and Marie Theriot (~1696 - ~1733).[2]

His siblings were:

Joseph married Marguerite Josephe Dugas (~1735 - 1758) in 1756 in Acadie. She perished at sea during the grand derangement in 1758, as they were being forcibly deported by the British to France.[2]

Joseph Bourg, widower of Marguerite-Joseph Dugast, disembarked at St. Malo on January 23, 1759 from one of the "Five Ships." [3] He resided with his children, and later also his second wife and their children, in the following parishes:

  • Plouer 1759 -1760
  • St Coulomb 1760 -1766
  • St. Servan 1766 - 1771[2]

Joseph married Marie Madeleine Granger (1731 - >1788) on 30 June 1760 in Pleurtuit, Britagne, France.[2]

  2. Joseph Bourg (Twin, 1761-1762)[4]
  3. Marie Josephe Bourg (~1764 - 1817)
  4. Fabien Joseph Sebastien Bourg (1765 - 1804)
  5. Jean Baptiste Bourg (1767 - 1813).
  6. Elizabeth-Blanche Bourg (1770)[5]

They immigrated to Louisiana aboard la Bergere, sailing from Nantes, France on 14 May 1785 and arrived at the port of New Orleans on August 15, 1785.[1] He was 52 years old.[6]

Joseph died at an unknown date after 15 August 1785 in Louisiana, New Spain.
