Rev. John Breckinridge was the son of John Breckinridge and Mary Hopkins Cabell. Despite the fact he was born and died in the same location, John moved around quite a bit.
John's father died when he was 9 and his oldest brother became the man of the house. John graduated from Princeton in 1818. He continued to study further at Princeton's Theological Seminary, graduating in 1821. He was the Secretary of the Board of Foreign Missions and Foreign Agent for the Presbyterian Church from 1838 - 1840.
He was an eloquent speaker and able controversialist and polemic writer, a man of extraordinary talents. He was the first member of his family to belong to the religious professions. He became one of the most attractive and powerful preachers of the Presbyterian Church. [1] Chaplain of the United States House of Representatives 1822-1823.
He married Margaret Miller in 1823. Their children were:
On the 1840 census in New Orleans, John Breckinridge was between 40 - 49, placing birth 1791-1800, He also has a child age 10 - 14 living with him, which was probably Samuel Miller Breckinridge.[2]
His wife Margaret died in 1838 and John married Mary Ann Babcock in 1840.[3] At the time of John's marriage to Mary Ann Babcock, John lived in New Orleans. [4] They had 1 child together[5] :
Rev. John Breckinridge died 4 Aug 1841 a month after his daughter was born (See Research Note). At the time of his death, he was President- elect of Oglethorpe University in Georgia. His memorial is in Lexington Cemetery, Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky. [6]
This profile originally showed Agatha was born in Kenya and stated that John may have died there. I have changed the profile. The 1860 and 1880 US Census both show she was born in Kentucky. As her birth was less than one month before her father's death at Cabell's Dale, Fayette County, Kentucky, it is probable she was born there. Vance Johnson 17 Oct 2020 [7] [8] [9]
