James Brown was born in Scotland.

James Brown was born 11 Mar 1874 in North Cotton, Kintore[1]. He was the son of James Brown and Jane Donald and his father James Brown was present for his birth. In the 1881 census James, age 7, is with his parents and siblings William J and Andrew W at Cottown, Kintore. In the 1891 census, James, age 17, is with his parents and siblings William, Alexander W, John D, Charles, Isabella and Alfred at North Cotton, Kintore.

In the 1901 census James, a Fireman on a Railway Engine, and his brother William J, an Agent for selling Rubislaw granite, are living with their maternal grandfather, widowed John Donald. James, a 32 year old Engine Driver, residing at 41 Dee St in Aberdeen, married Isabella Sherriffs, a 33 year old Prison Wardress, residing at Woodhead, Kintore. They married at Queens Rooms in Aberdeen on 25 Jul 1906. Witnesses were John D Brown and Isabella S Brown, siblings of James.

Their daughter Isabella Sheriffs Brown was born in 1907 and their son James was born in 1909, both at 61 Fonthill Rd in Aberdeen. In the 1911 census, James, a Railway Engine Driver, and Isabella are still living at 61 Fonthill Rd in Aberdeen with their 1 year old son James. Daughter Isabella was with her paternal Grandparents in South Cotton, Kintore. Still at the same address in the 1921 census, 47 year old James, a Haulage Contractor, is with his wife Isabella and their children Isabella 14, James 11 and George W. J. age 9.ames' wife Isabella died in 1926 and James, a Mechanical Engineer, died 28 Jan 1940 at home. He had Acute Influenza and Pneumonia.
