James Brown was born in Scotland.

James Brown was born 07 JAN 1841 in Kinnellar, son of William Brown and Catherine Forbes[1]. In the 1841 census, 5 month old James is with his parents and siblings William, Alexander and Mary at Blackchambers, Kinnellar[2]. In the 1851 census, the family is at Cotton, Kintore - James, now age 10 with siblings William, Alexander and Mary and parents William and Catherine[3]. In the 1861 census, James, now age 20, is still at Cottown with his parents and sisters Mary and Isabella[4]. James' father William died in 1862.

In the 1871 census, James is at Upper Cotton, the head of the household. With him is his widowed mother Catherine Forbes, sister Isabella Brown, niece Annabella Brown aka Anne Brown (daughter of sister Isabella), sister-in-law Christina Norrie (wife of brother Alexander), and 6 month old nephew Charles J. F. Brown, son of James' brother Alexander and his wife Christina Norrie[5].

On 04 Jul 1872, James, a 30 year old Farmer from Cotton, married Jane Donald age 20 from Ashfield Cottage, also in Kintore[6]. They married at Ashfield Cottage and witnesses were John Walker and William Carney. In the 1881 census, James and Jane are at Cottown, Kintore with their children James, William J and Alexander W. In the 1891 census, James and Jane are at North Cotton with their children James, William, Alexander W, John, Charles, Isabella and Alfred. Living next door is the family of James’ sister Isabella, married to William Riddel, and their family.

In the 1901 census, Cotton Town, Kintore, James age 60 is with his wife Jane 49 and children Alexander 21, John 18, Charles 16, Alfred 14, Isabella 13 and Mary . Also there is James’ sister Mary age 62 and servants William Lawrence and Margaret Birnie. Living next door is the family of James’ sister Isabella, married to Wm Riddell. Also in the 1901 census, children James and William J Brown are with their grandfather John Donald at 82 Bonnymuir Pl St Machar.

In the 1911 census, James 70 and Jane 60 are in North Cotton Kintore with daughter Isabella S 23 and granddaughter Isabella S age 3 – daughter of their son James Brown and Isabella Shireffs.

James, a Wood Merchant, died 09 May 1916 at Cottown, Kintore. He had influenza and pneumonia for 8 days. His son, Charles Brown, from Smithfield, Kintore, was the death informant and present when he died.

James and his wife are buried in the Kirkyard of Kintore.
