Biography

Jane Donald was born 11 Apr 1852 and baptized 20 May 1852, the daughter of Isabella Stephen and John Donald^[1]. In the 1861 census, Jane, shown as Jean, was living with her parents at Woodhead, Kintore^[2]. In the 1871 census, Jane is working as a domestic servant for her Uncle John Stephen and his wife Mary Paterson^[3].

On 04 Jul 1872, Jane, age 20, married James Brown, a 30 year old Farmer from Cotton^[4]. They married at Ashfield Cottage in Kintore and witnesses were John Walker and William Carney. In the 1881 census, James and Jane are at Cottown, Kintore with their children James, William J and Alexander W. In the 1891 census, James and Jane are at North Cotton with their children James, William, Alexander W, John, Charles, Isabella and Alfred. Living next door is the family of James’ sister Isabella, married to Wm Riddell, and their family.

In the 1901 census, Cotton Town, Kintore, James age 60 is with his wife Jane 49 and children Alexander 21, John 18, Charles 16, Alfred 14, Isabella 13 and Mary . Also there is James’ sister Mary S age 62 and servants William Lawrence and Margaret Birnie. Living next door is the family of James’ sister Isabella, married to Wm Riddell. Also in the 1901 census, children James and William J Brown are with their grandfather John Donald at 82 Bonnymuir Pl St Machar.

In the 1911 census, James 70 and Jane 60 are in North Cotton Kintore with daughter Isabella S 23 and granddaughter Isabella S age 3 – daughter of their son James Brown and Isabella Shireffs. In the 1921 census, 70 year old Jane is in North Cottown, Kintore, with her daughter Isabella S age 33 and Horseman James Emslie age 24.

Jane's husband James died 09 May 1916. Jane, age 76, passed away on 27 Jun 1927 at Rose Cottage in Kinellar. She had fatty degeneration of the heart. Her son William J Brown of 20 Hosefield Av in Aberdeen was the death informant.

Jane and her husband are buried in the Kirkyard of Kintore.
