Biography
Evelyn Herbert Dalrymple Clark was born in 1857, his birth being registered at Chelsea, London, in the 2nd quarter of that year[1]. He was the son of John Clark and Charlotte Sophia Dalrymple.
His mother Charlotte died on 17 December 1864 at age 48, and his father Major General John Clark died three months later, on 22 March 1865 at about age 63.
By 1871, Evelyn H D Clark (aged 13) was a Pupil, recorded at All Standard Grammar School in Bloxham, Oxfordshire.
He enlisted and served as a private soldier in the Army, but was invalided through ill-health.
On 11 October 1880 he married Emma Louisa Angell (the daughter of Edward John Angell, an Innkeeper) at the parish church in the parish of St John the Divine, Kennington, Surrey, by Licence[2]. He was a "Gentleman"; the witnesses were Edwin William Kerkup, Ada Maria Kerkup and Thomas William Brown.
Luton Reporter dated 16 October 1880, page 8:
MARRIAGES.
Oct. 11 at St. John the Divine, Brixton, by special licence, by the Rev. D. Esdale, Evelyn Herbert Dalrymple Clark, son of the late Majer General John Clerk, K.H., to Emma Louisa, eldest daughter of Edward John Angell.[3]
Children (if any) unknown.
In the 1881 England Census, Evelyn H. D. Clark (aged 25 and a Publican) was recorded living with his wife Emma L. Clark (25) at 8812 West Street in Fareham, Hampshire.
Evelyn (aged 24, employed as a Clerk) appeared in Court in the Hampshire-Lincolnshire circuit, charged with "stealing in a dwelling-house the sum of £35, the property of Thomas Martin, on the 10 May, 1882". His case was heard on 7 July 1882 and he pleaded guilty and was subsequently sentenced to 6 calendar months hard labour[4].
There were many newspaper reports at the time, one of which was published on page 6 of the Kilburn Times dated 14 July 1882:
A clerk, aged 24, named Evelyn Dalrymple Clark, was sent to prison Friday at Portsmouth for 6 months for theft. Clark was the son of a general who served at Waterloo and had six medals. He had already been acquitted on a charge of stealing a large amount of money, and now expressed the utmost penitence for his misdeeds.[5]
The same day, the Bridport News printed the following account on page 3:
SAD CASE—At the Portsmouth quarter sessions on Saturday Evelyn Herbert Dalrymple Clark, aged 24. son of the Major General Clark, who served with distinction in the Crimean War, pleaded guilty to having stolen, in a dwelling-house at Portsmouth, £35, the monies of Mr. T. Martin, on the 10th of May. It appears the prisoner, who has had a superior education, had enlisted and served as a private soldier in the army, but was invalided through ill-health. He took a lodging at prosecutor's house, and in his absence the money was stolen from a bedroom. The Recorder sentenced him to six months' hard labour.[6]
Sadly he passed away in 1885, aged about 28, his death being registered at Portsea Island, Hampshire in the 3rd quarter of that year[7].
