John Clark was born in about 1802. He was the second son of Alexander Clark and Margaret Shaw.
He joined the Army on 2 June 1814 and fought at the Battle of Waterloo and the storming of Cambray.
On 27 November 1821 he attained the rank of Lieutenant and served in the campaigns of 1824 and 1825, in Ava, including the taking of Rangoon, Kimendine, Kamaroot, and Mahattee. He led the attack upon the fortified heights at Aracan, and was severely wounded in the neck, arm, and left side.
In 1837 he was appointed Knight, Hanoverian Order (K.H.).
John was a Major in the 54th Regiment when he married Charlotte Sophia Dalrymple (the daughter of Maj.-Gen. Sir John Dalrymple of North Berwick, 5th Bt. and Charlotte Warrender) on 15 December 1836 at St George's Hanover Square, London, by Licence[1]. The witnesses were Hew Dalrymple, Janet Jemima Dalrymple, Jane Linsday and William Clark.
They went on to have at least nine children. By 1851, John and his family were living at Jersey, Channel Islands, having spent some time in Ireland:

By the time the 1861 England Census was enumerated, John Clark (aged 61, Major General Army) was recorded living with his wife Charlotte T Clark (44) and their children Charlotte T Clark (23), Margaret H M Clark (16), Edmund T J Clark (12), Henry W Clark (9), Ian H W Clark (7), Evelyn H D Clark (4) and Julian W S Clark (2) at 62 Landsdowne Place, Hove, Sussex. Also in the household was one servant, Ann W Collin (25).
His wife Charlotte Sophia died on 17 December 1864.
He died on 22 March 1865 and was buried on 27 March 1865 at St Andrew the Old Churchyard, Hove, Brighton and Hove Unitary Authority, East Sussex, England[3][4]. PLOT: Section D #55

His Will was proved on 21 April 1865 at the Principal Registry by the oaths of Sir Hew Dalrymple of North Berwick, Baronet and Patricia Dalrymple of 20 Chesham-place, Middlesex, spinster, the Executors. Effects under £12,000. Resworn at the Stamp Office March 1867 under £9,000
