Note: Ephilalet decided to follow two of his younger brothers, Elam and Jedediah, to the Great Lakes in the spring of 1830. He was an older brother, and the best farmer of all the boys. His was a fatal choice as the ship went down Dec. 14, 1830, and he drowned. John was to have joined the others the following spring, but the death of Eliphalet caused Asa, their father, to make a stand. He told Elam to stay away from the rest of the boys, and that no more could become sailors. Asa Cobb never forgave Elam for taking Eliphalet and Jedediah away from the family farm in Crawford County.^[3]
