Biography

Puritan Great Migration
Robert Coe immigrated to New England between 1621 and 1640 and later departed for Hempstead, Suffolk, Long Island.

Robert Coe is often called the founder of the Coe family in America.[1] He was born in Thorpe-Morieux, Suffolk, England, the son of Henry Coe and Mary Vincent.[2]Boxford,[3][4] He was baptized on 26 Oct 1595 at Thorpe-Morieux, England[2][3][4] He was married three times with all four of his known children by his first wife.

He immigrated to New England on the Francis in 1634 and settled initially in Watertown Massachusetts with his second wife and four children. He was made a freeman in Watertown on 3 September 1634. He was clearly well-educated and served in many elected positions including that of Magistrate. He moved several times during his life. He was in Wethersfield, Connecticut by 1635, Stamford in 1641, Hempstead, Long Island in 1644, Newtown, Long Island in 1652 Jamaica, Long Island in 1656 and back in Hempstead by 1687.

Birth

Baptized: 26 October 1595 at Thorpe-Morieux, Suffolk, England,[3]

Marriages and Children

Married: 1st - Mary Unknown about 1623 in England. She was buried 27 Oct. 1628 [3][5] See the note below regarding her possible LNAB.

Married: 2nd - Hannah Dearsley on 29 April 1630 in England. Hannah immigrated to America with Robert and his children. [3][5]

Married: 3rd - Jane Unknown on 18 Feb. 1674-5 at Long Island. Jane had been married twice before; first to John (or Bartholomew[3]) Smith of Taunton, Mass. in about 1633, and second to Edward Rouse who died in 1672[6]at Carolina.[3]

Children of Robert Coe and Mary Unknown:

  1. John Coe, bpt. 20 Aug. 1625 at Boxford, Eng.[6] (History of Hempstead shows that Robert Coe's son John was born in 1626)[4][3]
  2. Robert Coe, bpt. 19 Sept. 1626. Twin of Mary Coe, m. Hannah Mitchell [3][6]
  3. Mary Coe, bpt. 19 Sept. 1626. Twin of Robert Coe[3][6]
  4. Benjamin Coe, b. bpt. 18 Oct. 1628, m. Abigail Carman[6] (History of Hempstead shows that Robert Coe's son Benjamin was born in 1629)[4][3]
Possible LNAB of first wife:
Robert Coe's first wife is sometimes seen as Mary Crabbe, sister of Richard Crabbe. There is an absence of documentation of this relationship; it was certainly a possibility, however, it should probably not be assumed.
It can be found in records [7] that Robert Coe and Richard Crabbe referred to each other as brothers-in-law, but where the relationship comes from seems to be undocumented.
The two families are close; they both seem to have come from Suffolk, England and were of the Puritan faith. The Coe family came to Boston and then to Watertown around July 1634 and Richard Crabbe arrived at Boston then Watertown in 1634[8] Both Robert Coe and Richard Crabbe were early settlers in Wethersfield, CT and Stamford, CT. [9] Robert Coe moved on to Long Island, but Richard Crabbe and his wife remained in Stamford and Greenwich at least until 1657; Richard and his wife, Goodwoman Crabbe were outspoken against the church leaders of the colony where they were tried in court and had fines levied against them. [10] Richard Crabbe refers to his wife as having been a well-bred woman in England, "a zealous professor from her childhood, almost beyond example."[11]
In summation, in addition to the possibility that Richard Crabbe and Robert Coe's first wife Mary were brother and sister, Robert Coe and Richard Crabbe could have married sisters, Hannah Dearslay and Goodwoman Crabbe or just as easily, Robert Coe's first wife, Mary, could have been a sister of Goodwife Crabbe.

Death

Died: Between 20 June 1687 and 28 June 1690.[3]
The exact date of his death is not known. The dates are when he acknowledged a deed, and the date his wife sold property of her own account.

Occupation

Robert Coe appears in 1625 in Boxford, co. Suffolk Eng. when he is elected to the office of overseer of cloth at Boxford and remains living there until 1634, when he and his family head to America[2][3]

Research Notes

  • There does not appear to be a death date on record for Robert Coe Sr., but Robert Charles Anderson's "The Great Migration Begins.." does have that he made a land transaction in 1687 and in 1690 his widow, Jane, sells land on her own. Estimating 1689.[3]
  • Wikipedia shows Robert Coe's death date as 1689 using Robert Coe, Puritan,[20] which references Printed Records of Hempstead, vol. 8, p.246-7[21]It was from this record that Robert Coe's death date was estimated to be 1689.

Good point, Gerrie. I moved things around on the top.

To Beryl's point, shouldn't we place the PGM sticker above the New Netherland sticker since he arrived in New England before he eventually settled in New Netherland?
PGM needs to manage so that the PGM Beyond sticker can be on this profile. (which I just now added)

I agree both projects can co-manage.

Thank you.

Hi Beryl, it appears he was in New Netherland from 1644 through the rest of his life - if i am reading the biography correctly. I don't see any particular reason why both groups can't dual manage the profile, unless I am mistaken.
Do we need both NNS and PGM managing this profile?

I'm surprised that this profile is not fleshed out more. This reference provides lots of great details. "ROBERT COE, PURITAN

I've yet to find a death date for Robert Coe, but Robert Charles Anderson's "The Great Migration Begins.." does have that he made a land transaction in 1687 and in 1690 his widow, Jane, sells land on her own. Estimating 1689.
I've marked the Death date as uncertain as there is some confusion about the exact date.

I wasn't able to find the website that has his grave. I found 2 Find A Grave memorials, but both have that the burial location is unknown; one gives a death date, but it's unsourced and the other lists that the death date is unknown, but gives a death place, but doesn't source it. I think it assumes the death place is based on last known residence.

I'm wondering if the death date came from an estimated date in an old genealogy program - a gedcom might take out modifiers and just leave the date.
