Biography

Robert Coker was born about 1606 in England. Judging from his sailing companions, it is possible he was from Wiltshire in England.[1]

Disputed Origins

The parents of Robert Coker are at present unknown. He was previously linked to Robert Coker and his wife Amy of Mappowder in Dorset. This couple had several children and their second son Robert was born in 1605-6.[2] This Robert of Mappowder however died in 1543 and was buried in his local church. His memorial mentions his parents.[3] He also left a will that also clearly links him both to his parents and several siblings.[4] A new profile for their son Robert has been created.

Migration, Newbury

He migrated in 1634 on the Mary & John, out of London, Robert Sayres, shipmaster.[1] His name is on the passenger list of March 24, 1633/4 sailing from Southampton, England. He resided at Newbury, Massachusetts Bay where he is found on a list of church members dated April 1671. He took the Oath of Allegiance there in 1678.[1] He was granted 9 acres of land by the town of Newbury and on January 7, 1651/2 he bought four acres from Francis Plumer. Regarding the offices he held, he was on the Essex Petit jury on March 27, 1655 and was the Newbury constable in March of 1656.

Robert married Catherine (_____) by about 1640. Her surname is unknown. Their children were:

Following the death of his first wife, he married (2nd) May (Jones) Woodbridge after February 8, 1687/8 and before December 16, 1697. Mary was the widow of Thomas Woodbridge and the daughter of Ann, wife of Paul White by a previous husband. She died at Newbury on June 10, 1714.
  2. Sarah was born November 24, 1643. She married James Smith at Newbury on May 16, 1664.

Katherine (Coker) Silver is not a child of Robert Coker and Catherine, she needs to be removed!

Thanks Steven. Katherine has been detached from these parents.

Coker-1089 and Coker-195 appear to represent the same person because: the death date in the bio disagrees but the children agree. The 1680 date is correct according to sources.

Please see Coker-1089. That profile has exact same spouse as this one but the dates are off.

If these are two different people then the spouse is most likely wrong on one. If these are same people with details that need to be updated please work towards merge.

Thank you for unlinking.

I've added the section, not sure if in right place or if all the refs were necessary. (they are on the new profile)

I believe Helen has found sufficient evidence to detach these parents. I'm detaching them. Helen, would you be willing to add a short Disputed Origins section here, linking to the previously held parents?

I have no doubt that Robert Coker s of William and Amy, died unmarried in Mapowder

I've found and transcribed his will, He probably died in 1643 as stated by Hutchins(he wrote his will on the 11th Sept, 10 days before the death date given by Hutchins though probate wasn't until 1647) transcript The will confirms his relationship to his mother Amy, father William, sister Ann https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Coker-396 who has a bio and to brother William, sister, Mary wife of Charles Brune; buried at Puddletwon memorials at Puddletown and sister Elizabeth Jeffrey. see also 1623 Visitation Dorset

There has been a lot of debate about the origins of Robert Coker. I would suggest extensive research before making a change.

Based on what Helen found, it looks like we should detach the immigrant from these parents. They had a son with the same name but he died in England. Objections?.

According to Hutchins 'History and Antiquities of Dorset' Vol 3 p 723 Robert Coker son of Robert and Amy Moldford b 1605 died in 1643 at age 38 and was buried at Mapowder. His citation is from the mans epitaph p 730

There is one memorial in the parish church at Mapowder that reads:

To the memory of Amy Coker, eldest daughter of Thomas Moldford of Chulmely in ye countie of Devon, esq and second wife of Robert Coker of Mapowder, esq whoe dyed ye 7th of July, 1648, and in the 73rd yeare of her age.

underneath the arms of Coker

On the base of the same monument,in the same letters Heere lyeth the body of Robert Coker, gent, second sone of Robert Coker abovesayd by Amy Coker his second wife, who dyed the 21 day of September in ye 38 year of his age, 1643,by whose will this monument was erected Regretably the parish register for this period no longer exists. The memorial may still exist but can't promise to visit in the near future! (but on this kind of detail Hutchins is usually accurate)
