John Colquhoun, possible older brother to William (Cahoon), was captured at Dunbar as well. John either died at sea aboard the English ship "John & Mary" or very shortly after arriving in the colonies. [*See Research Notes below]
Name
Name: John Cowan /Colquhoun/
Birth
John Colquhoun was born ca. 1632, in Dunbartonshire, Scotland. Possibly at Tullichewan, , , Scotland
Tillyquhoun (Tullichewan, Tulliechewan, Tully-Colquhoun, Tuloch Eoghain "the hill of Eoghan")
Tullichewan is located on the south end of Loch Lomond, Scotland, in the Vale of the Leven (or simply "The Vale"), the second swiftest river in Scotland. Near Tullichewan was found the ancient ferry of Balloch, where the old road from the West Highlands to Stirling crossed the "Water of Leven". The river Leven (Gaelic: Leamhan), is named from the grand-daughter of a King of Scotland. Tullichewan is about a mile northwest of Alexandria.
Originally, from its name, a Colquhoun possession, it belonged in 1543 to a member of the great Dennistoun family, Patrick Dennistoun of Dalvait. A century later it was acquired by Alexander Colquhoun, third son of Sir John Colquhoun of Luss, by Lady Lilias Graham, sister of the famous Marquess of Montrose. Alexander Colquhoun inherited the property of Tillyquhoun (Tullichewan, Tulliechewan), where his descendants resided[1]
His son, Alexander Colquhoun inherited the property of Tillyquhoun (Tullichewan, Tulliechewan), where his descendants resided[2].
When Sir Humphrey Colquhoun of Luss died in 1718 without male issue, the Tullichewan family came to represent the male line of the Colquhouns. Sir Humphrey Colquhoun entailed the Luss estates on his daughter Anne Colquhoun and her husband James, son of the Laird of Grant, and since that day the Colquhouns of Luss have been really Grants by the male descent[3]. However, during the 17th Century, Luss was the home of the Baronet of Luss/Baronet of Colquhoun/Baronet of Nova Scocia, and a center of Colquhoun population. The entire area around Luss and south to the Clyde was territory of the Barony. Tullichewan is located less than 9 miles from Luss. The castle at Tullichewan was not built until 1792, about one hundred fifty years after the birth of John Colquhoun.
