Notes on parentage

Between 11 June 1683 and 1700 Maria Kickers and Jan Cornelisz were legally married, but at the same time, from at least 1687 Frederich Both and Maria were lovers, apparently with the agreement of Jan. During divorce proceedings in 1700 Maria conceded that eight of her children, that is Theunis Botha, Willem Bootha, Catrijna Both, Cornelia Botha, Anna Bota, Maria Botha, Jacobus Botha and Johannes Botha were fathered by Frederich Both(a) with the apparent encouragement (aanleijding) of her spouse, Jan Cornelisz, at the time. All of these offspring subsequently used the surname Both(a). However, in 1689 two women alleged that Theunis, Maria's oldest child, was fathered by Ferdinandùs Appel. This is born out by modern DNA tests, which have shown that direct patrilineal descendants of Theunis tested positive for the same Y-DNA haplogroup as direct patrilineal descendants of Appel. [12][13]

Sy ma, Maria Kickers was getroud met Jan Cornelisz, maar van ten minste 1685 af het sy 'n verhouding met Frederich Botha gehad, met die moontlike goedkeuring van haar man. 9. (Copied from the profile of Jan "Jan Kiekers, Bombam, Jan Cornelis" Botha formerly Cornelisz aka Boota, Bota, van Oudtbeierlandt on Jan 2, 2021.) Note on last name "Botha": Though Jan Cornelisz was according to records of the time never known as Botha, the name is still included on this profile under "Other Last Names" (AKA). The name is associated with Jan Cornelisz because some semi-recent genealogies held the suspicion that he may also have been known as Botha. This misunderstanding was due to the fact that "his" children, who were in fact not his own biological offspring, by Maria Kickers later all went under the name of Botha or various spelling versions thereof.
