Biography

1776 Project
Alexander Crawford jr. served with Virginia Militia during the American Revolution.

Alexander Crawford, fifth child of Alexander and Mary, was at the battle of Point Pleasant. His death occurred June 19, 1830. He also served as Ensign in the Revolution-sworn in office Nov 11, 1780 under J. Cartmill. (Virginia Militia in the Revolution, J. T. McAllister, page 181). [1]

Our ALEXANDER CRAWFORD JR. or the 2nd is the orphaned son oF ALEXANDER CRAWFOPRD SR.& MARY McMPHEETERS who were killed during the Indian raids of 1764 throughout the buffalo gap area of Augusta county,Virginia region. Grand father WILLIAM McPHEETERS took original custody over the children,however he passed away before the children were grown. This record shows his uncle ,next of kin taking guardianship of ALEXANDER JR. By order of the court March 17, 1773 in Augusta county,Virginia. This is 3 Years prior to the Revolutionary war of 1776 of our nation's birth; Book_Date: WB5-75, Description: Orphan; Remarks: Samuel McPheeters'bond as guardian to samuel crawford, orphan of Alexander Carawford; Date: 17 MArch 1773.

His first wife was a Miss Hopkins and they had 4 children together;

  • Polly Crawford-married John Poague.
  • Betsy Crawford, married William Logan.
  • Catherine "Kitty" Crawford-
  • Sallie Carwford-married John Walker.

His second a Mrs. McClure and they had 5 children together.

  • James E. Crawford- married Phoebe McClung.

Mrs. Elizabeth McClure is a widow of Malcom McClure. [2]

James E. Crawford spent the latter years of his life in the Great Calf Pasture, Augusta. His children are Baxter Crawford and others.

Alexander Jr. lived on Walker's creek, Rockbridge, and was for many years an elder in New Providence church. His death occured June 19, 1830.

Three of his sons,—William, George, and Samuel,—died young.

Robert lived and died on his father's homestead in Rockbridge.

A grandson of his, Rev. Alexander Crawford, is now (1888) pastor of a church at Campbellsville, Kentucky.

(Another Alexander Crawford died the latter part of 1764, or early in 1765. The inventory of his Estate was filed March 19, 1765. He had at least two children, Mary and Rebecca, for whom a William crawford qualified as guardian in 1768. what family he belonged to, we can not ascertain) [3]
