Biography

James was a Friend (Quaker)

James Davis was born after 1735 in East Bradford, Chester, Province of Pennsylvania. His parents were Abraham Davis and Susanna (Bishop) Davis.^[1] His father died in 1764 in East Bradford.^[1] He left one third of his personal estate to him in his Will.^[1]

James married the widow Patience (Miller) Bishop on the 30th of May 1754 in Wilminton, Delaware.^[2][3] From his Will we find the names of six of his known children.

6. Rebeckah (Davis) Hiatt m. William Hiatt 1793^[4]

At some point they settled in Randolph County, North Carolina. In 1792, Eve "daughter of James and Patience of Randolph County" married Thomas Stalker.^[4] A year later thier daughter Rebekah married a William Hiatt.^[4]

James died on the 15th of March 1805 and was buried on his property.^[5] Patience died in 1813 and was buried beside him.^[5] James had been considered "one of the early settlers of Randolph County."^[5]

James Davis married Patience Bishop on May 30, 1754 at Holy Trinity (Old Swedes) Church in Wilmington, Delaware.^[2][3]

Death & Legacy

James Davis died on June 6, 1805 in Randolph County, North Carolina.^[6] The death place cannot be ascertain exactly where he died in Randolph County.

1. My just debts be paid
2. To my loving wife, 80 acres including the plantation and joining the old line to have during her widowhood
3. To my daughter Hannah, all moveable property, except for the shed horses which are to be sold and equally divided between my wife and three daughters
4. At the death of my wife, both land and moveables shall belong to my daughter Hannah. In case of either marrying, an equal division shall be made
5. To my sons Jesse, Amos, and Job: the remainder of land to be equally divided between them, on their paying thirty pounds to each of my three daughters: Rebeckah, Eve, and Hannah
6. That my friends Samuel Willikan and Robert M Crackan be my executors

Burial

James Davis was buried with his wife Patience Davis at Marlboro Friends Meeting Cemetery in Sophia, North Carolina.^[6]

"Patience Davis, w., d. 6-6-1813, aged about 82 yrs., bur. beside h."

James does not name his wife in his Will, he simply says "my loving wife." If Patience lived a long life and was buried next to him, why would he have a second wife? Does that marriage belong to one of the other James Davis? (Silva-1055 11:38, 3 May 2021 (UTC))
