Biography

Ruth Delano[1] was baptized 5 August 1753,[2][3][4][5] [6] of Duxbury, Plymouth, Massachusetts, British America. Presumably, she was born shortly before. One source,[7] though, dates her birth as 1757.

On 14 September, 1774, also in Duxbury, she married Jonathan Delano, the grandson of his namesake.[8][9][10]

Their marriage provides an example (perhaps extreme) of the extensive intermarriage among the earliest New England families. Jonathan and Ruth were first cousins (both grandchildren of Jonathan Delano Sr and Hannah Doty) as well as third cousins once removed (via a different line, with John Alden and Priscilla Mullins as the common ancestor). One can suppose that old families were reluctant to marry into the families of less established newcomers. The beneficial effect of intermarriage to the descendants is that if you can find one Mayflower ancestor, you can probably find several.

At some point, the family moved to Maine (then a province of Massachusetts). Jonathan died there in 1833, after Maine had become a state. Ruth then resided with her grandson, John, in Stark, Somerset, Maine.[11].

She died 1 March 1844. [12]

Footnotes

Hill, in one of the usually authoritative "Silver Books," gives a death date of 1 March 1841, citing "PEDS Files," possibly the same source cited for the 1844 date.[13] This might be a simple copying error.

Additional Footnote

Maine Cemetery Records lists Ruth's date of death simply as 1844 (no birth date given), but her age is given as 88 yrs.[14] If her birth year is 1753, that would make her death year 1841 as given by Edward Doty Hill. However, Ruth clearly died 1 Mar 1844 as shown on the "United States Revolutionary War Pension Payment Ledgers, 1818-1872," referenced in sources below.

Delano-1697 and Delano-1016 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents (dups pending merge), birthdate and place, same spouse (dups), son Thomas on both profiles. Please merge

The proposed merge has been completed.

UNKNOWN-282539 and Delanoa-1 appear to represent the same person because: Unknown-282539 was created in ignorance of relevant facts. Now that the facts have been found, it's clear they are the same person. However, I think that the LNAB should be Delano, not Delanoa.
