Biography

See grandfather, Abraham Theobald Dewald, profile on WikiTree.

Johann Jacob Dewald appears in 1755 & 1756 Reformed Lutheran Church Baptism records of what is now Berks Co, PA. First when he is married and second when his twin sons, Daniel and Michael, are baptized. [1]

Jacob Dewald next appears in the Lincoln Co, North Carolina land records when he purchases and sells land there in the 1770's. The keepers of records appear to change the spelling of the Dewald surname and it merges into the Devault spelling and later shows up in some records as Davault. The Dewald and Gerhard Wills families are said to have migrated from Berks Co, PA down into what became Lincoln Co, NC together. They also show up together later in Washington and Scott Co, VA. The earliest records show that Gerhard Wills had recorded 50 acres of land adjacent to Michael Dewald in Berks Co, PA. The Wills and Dewald families appear together in Berks Co, PA church records.

Jacob Devault (Sr) appears in the Washington County, Virginia Tax Rolls in 1783 when he follows his oldest son, Abraham there. Abraham had filed a land entry 18 Feb 1782 for 400 acres on Opossom Creek in Washington County, VA as the assignee of Jacob Wills. [2] Abraham appears in the 1782 Tax Rolls, but Jacob Devault (Sr) shows up in 1783 on the Tax Rolls with 2 Tith. [3] Obviously Jacob was the elder (father) of the two men. The fact that Jacob Devault Sr was the father of the Devault men and women who show up in the early Washington Co, VA records becomes clear in 1792 when Jacob Devault Jr records a land entry for 15 acres, which includes a Mill, as assignee of Abraham Devault. Jacob Devault Senior and Junior, along with Abraham Devault all show up in the 1792 Tax Roll of Washington County. On 30 Nov 1798, David Devault enters 70 acres of land on both sides of Opossom Creek joining Jacob Devault Sr on the West. Jacob Devault Sr and Jr are again listed next to each other on the 1804 Washington Co, VA Tax Rolls.

The exact date and place of Jacob Devault Senior's death is yet to be discovered. It is pretty likely that he was still in Washington County, VA at the time of his death as a Jacob Devault, age 45+ (born 1765 or before) shows up with a wife in the same age group with 3 male and 2 female children in the home in the 1810 Washington Co, VA census. The last year that a Jacob Devault shows up in the Washington County Tax Rolls is 1814 when Scott County, VA was created from Washington County. A younger Jacob Devault (Jr) shows up in the 1820 and 1830 census of Scott County, VA.
