Joseph Doucet was born March 12, 1706 near Port-Royal. He was baptized the next day sponsored by Sr. Consolin aide d'artillerie and Dlle Loppinot.[1][2]

He married Anne Surette December 8, 1730.[3]

Their known children were:

  1. Joseph Doucet (Dec 6 1731 – Nov 16 1809) .

This family was at Port-Royal and was deported to Massachusetts where they are found as of 1757, mostly in Gloucester. He was on the 1760 census at Gloucester, Massachusetts and in 1763 he is on the census of Massachusetts. [1]

In 1766, Joseph Doucet requested permission to leave New England with his family so as to go to Quebec. Instead, Joseph Doucet traveled on foot through the woods from Massachusetts to Nova Scotia to be reunited with his children. Some had settled at Baie Ste-Marie and others in Yarmouth. It is believed that he died around December 1767 in the area that is now known as Argyle, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia.[4]

His son Michel made his home in Eel Brook, where David was born in 1791. He is the one better known as "Le Grand David" who with others founded, about the year 1829, the settlement first called "Doucet Settlement", then ever since "Doucetteville".

His son Jean Magloire settled in Wedgeport, starting the Wedgeport Doucet and Doucette branch

He is the ancestor of all Doucets in Yarmouth County.

Research Notes

DNA

It was previously believed that Germain Doucet, born in 1595 was this Germain's father--he is his great-grandfather. A paper by Marie Rundquist describes how yDNA testing has shown that Germain's father was Amerindian. (haplogroup C3b, now c-p39). Haplogroup c3b Explained

Doucet-2244 and Doucet-21 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, death date on unsourced Doucet-2244 is an estimate.

Same spouse, needs merge Same child Anne also needs merge. Death date is a guess on 2244.
