Biography

Birth and Parents

Elizabeth was the daughter of Sir William Ferrers, 5th Baron Ferrers of Groby, and his first wife Philippa Clifford.[1][2] Her date of birth is unknown and is estimated. Her father held lands in many counties, so her birthplace is unknown as well.

The arms of her parents can be seen in the building known as Badesley Clinton Hall in Warwickshire, a shield exists with the arms of Ferrers impaling Clifford, checky or and azure a fesse gules with the inscription: "William Ferrers, the sixth Lord Ferrers of Groby married Philip, daughter of Roger, Lord Clifford of Appleby".[3]

Marriage and Children

Elizabeth married Sir William Culpeper of Aylesford, Kent, son of Sir John Culpeper.[2] They had three sons:

Properties

In 1433, it may be this Elizabeth Culpeper who was charged with failure to maintain ditches at Oxenwell near the manor of Soar which was part of the Culpeper holdings.[5]

A 1460 survey of the manor of Hadlow shows properties, including a mill, belonging to Lady Elizabeth Culpeper. It also suggests that some of these properties may have been part of her widow's portion.[6]

Death and Burial

Elizabeth and her husband were buried at West Peckham, Kent. William died testate 20 July 1457. Elizabeth's date of death is unknown, however, in the period 1467-1472, Roger Brent sued her son, William, over property "late of Elizabeth, late wife of William Culpeper, Knt."[2]

There is a brass effigy of Lady Elizabeth Culpeper on the top of the altar tomb in the northeast corner of the chancel in the church at West Peckham, Kent. The inscription reads:

Orate pro animabus Willelmi Culpeper, militis, et Elizabethae, uxoris ejus, qui quidem Willelmus obijt XX die Julij, anno domini M.CCCC.XVII et domina Elizabeth obijt...die, anno domini M.CCCC.LX[7]
Translated: Pray for the souls of William Culpeper, knight, and Elizabeth his wife, who William died 20 July, in the year of our Lord 1417 (this is incorrect and should read 1457) and lady Elizabeth died in the year of our lord 1460.

Elizabeth (Ferrers) Culpeper appears in Magna Carta Ancestry in a Richardson-documented trail from Gateway Ancestor John Stockman to Magna Carta Surety Baron Saher de Quincy (vol. IV, pages 107-111 STOCKMAN) that was badged for the Magna Carta Project in January 2023. The trail is outlined in the Magna Carta Trails section of the Gateway's profile.
In fact, she was descended from 7 surety barons through either parent.
See Base Camp for more information about identified Magna Carta trails and their status. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".

I'll be working on this profile on behalf of the Magna Carta project. Cheers, Elizabeth :-)
This profile is in a Richardson-documented trail between Gateway Ancestor John Stockman and Magna Carta surety baron Saher de Quincy that needs development by the Magna Carta Project. If there are no objections, I will soon be adding the project as co-manager of this profile and will add a project box and project section to the biography. This profile still needs to be developed against the project's checklist. Thanks!
