Sorry that you didn't get a match showing up when you entered the details for a new profile. It happens unfortunately I am not sure how often. It can be due to privacy settings as there are a lot of unlisted profiles now.
It is frustrating but you have already taken action by contacting manager. Once the merge goes through you will both be manager for the profile.
If you ask the the community the question in the G2G forum you may get a fuller answer on how frequent it happens
