John was born about 1568 in England. No baptismal record has been found to prove an exact date or place.
On 22 July 1593, John married Jane Watson in Cottingham, Yorkshire, England.[1][2]The Parish Registers of Cottingham transcribed by Tracy Eliot Hazen have recorded this marriage as:
1593 Jones Grant & Jenete Wattson xxii die Julij.[2]
"They lived in Cottingham and in Hessle, co. York, where their children were baptized -- two in Cottingham and four in Hessle."[3]
Children
Children of John and Jane Watson.
Averila, baptized 13 June 1596 in Cottingham,[2] buried 26 June 1596.[2]
George, baptized 20 August 1598 in Cottingham,[2] married at Cottingham, 7 November 1625, Helen Blafeete.[2] Four children.
Thomas, baptized 12 February 1600/1 in Hessle,[2] married at Cottingham, 21 September 1624, Jane Haburne,[2] died at Rowley, Massachusetts before 1643.
DO NOT MERGE this John Grant of Cottingham/Hessle with either of these two men:
John Grant of Roxby, son of George Grant and Julian Claryonette, husband of Alice Tuberville is a DIFFERENT man than John Grant of Cottingham/Hessle who married Jane Watson. The John Grant of Cottingham/Hessle was in Hessle having children with Jane Watson until 1607 and could not be marrying Alice Turberville in 1600 in Roxby.
There also has been a lot of confusion between John Grant of Cottingham/Hessle (in England) and a Sir John Grant 5th of Freuchie who was born in 1568 in Scotland. The birth of John "Sir John" Grant's son, John Grant 6th of Freuchie , in Scotland on 17 August 1596 proves that the latter family lived in Scotland in 1596. Meanwhile, the biography for this John clearly shows that this John Grant was in Cottingham, Yorkshire, England in 1596. The baptism of this John Grant's daughter, Averila Grant, on 13 June 1596 found in the Parish Registers of Cottingham, Yorkshire establishes this residency. The Scotland-born son of John Grant 6th of Freuchie (17 August 1596) and England-born Averilia Grant (13 June 1596) have close birth dates in different countries which proves their fathers were different men with the same name and approximate birth year (but in different countries).
