Biography

I joined the Army on 20 October 1982. Just months after graduating from High School. My job or (MOS) was Track Vehicle Mechanic. In a nutshell, everything that was moved by a track system fell into my job of maintenance. I must say that joining just a decade from the end of the horrible period of the Vietnam War almost guaranteeing us a long period of peace. We had 18 years to prepare from the end of the Vietnam War in 1973. Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait on the 2nd of August 1990 my unit landed in Saudi Arabia on 20 August 1990. I belong to the only Division trained in desert combat. The 24th Infantry Division out of Fort Stewart, Georgia. We were an advance party to prepare King Abdul-Aziz Port Dammam for the landing of multiple friendly forces from all over the world. Our task was completed when my Battalion relocated somewhere along the petroleum pipeline road that ran from east to west close to the Saudi Arabia/Iraq border. From there different types of maintenance combat teams were selected to be directly attached to all combat units within our Division. My team was attached to one of the elite units of the 24th Infantry Division, the 2nd Battalion 4th Cavalry Division. My maintenance team deployed further west on the pipeline road next to the 101st Airborne Division. There we dug in and waited for furthered instruction. Around 4am the war trumpet sounded. All ground units began the ground offensive. I was only a year old when in 1965 the first Combat Troops arrived on Vietnam. Now it was 1991 twenty-six years later. Were we ready? We were ready but we were sacred. No human being is ready for war. We were not born to take someone's life. Soldiers are brainwashed during Basic Training. The psychological I is erased and replace with a WE. One team mind ready to take orders. Someone told me once "A soldier is trained to receive and act on orders. Never question them. Prepared to give our lives for Country. If a Company is given the order to march forwards towards a cliff soldiers will begin to march and will not stop by the edge of the cliff. Only until the next command was given HALT". And so, we entered Iraq and in only 100 hours the life of thousands for soldiers were changed forever. Twenty-eight of the die heroes. The rest of us gave our psychological wellbeing to become COMBAT VETERANS.

Hi

I’ve not heard back from you regarding the Military and War Project check-in so have gone ahead and removed you from the project for now. If you’d like to rejoin at any stage you would be most welcome to do so by answering the G2G sign-up post here.

I sent you a check-in message a week ago about the Military and War Project to ask you about your continued involvement but have no yet heard back from you. Do you still want to be in the project?

If I don’t hear from you by the same time next week I’ll assume that you’ve moved on to other things but you’re most welcome to re-join the project at any time.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Mary, Project Coordinator, Military and War Project

Alex, regarding Rhea-122, you wrote "Archibald Rhea II married Margaret Campbell abt 1768 in Ireland. See source"

Although unsourced, his profile has birth place of USA and children born in USA.

Hi Alex,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working within the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus, whether time period, location, or special event. Read the goals and tasks of the project and join if it is a good fit.

Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.
