James was born in 1757. He was raised in Lunenberg County, Virginia. He first enlisted as a minute man in 1775 in the company of Captain Robert Dickson, under Lieutenant Alexander Winn, and Ensign Peter Jones. The troops were commanded by Colonel Charles Lewis & Colonel Haynes Morgan. He served again in August 1871, being drafted into the company of Captain Roberson under Lieutenant James Vaughn and commanded by Colonel John Holcomb.
James moved from Lunenburg County, Virginia to Rockingham County,
North Carolina in 1792. In 1806 he moved to Davidson County in the State of Tennessee. He was residing there in 1832 when he filed for a pension from his service in the revolution. He was pensioned at the rate of $20/yearly for service as a private for 6 months in the Virginia militia. James Haley was still a resident of Davidson County, Tennessee during the 1840 census. He died in 27 Oct 1841 in Shelbyville, Bedford County, Tennessee.
