Disputed Origins

His father was John Hall, but it is uncertain which John Hall it was. For now, his father will remain John Hall so that Ralph and his known brother Deacon John Hall remain connected.

His mother is not Pease Farmer, who may not have even existed; see her profile for further details.

Biography

This profile is part of the Hall Name Study.

Lieutenant Ralph Hall was born in 1619 in Dover, Kent, England, the son of John Hall. His mother is unknown.

Ralph Hall emigrated from England to Boston, Massachusetts, in 1639 with his parents. At first, as a single man, he staked a claim near present-day Exeter, New Hampshire, along the western side of the Pascataqua River, near the Maine border. The records of Exeter, New Hampshire, show that Ralph Hall was there from 1639 to 1645, and again permanently after 1664.

In about 1644 he married Kent-born immigrant, Mary Chesley (b. 1624 in Dover, England), whose family had emigrated to New England about the same time as the Halls.[1]

His marriage brought Ralph Hall back to Charleston, Boston's harbor town, in Massachusetts. They had two daughters Mary, 1648 & Huldah, 1649, there. Apparently his father, John Hall, lived there. Records of land sales in Charlestown, by Ralph Hall and his wife Mary, are as follows: they mortgaged land on the "Mystic side" to Thomas Gardiner, of Roxbury, which he had purchased from Thomas Burton. Ralph then sold twenty acres on Mystic side on July 15, 1648; he conveyed sixty acres of land in Charlestown, Feb. 2, 1649, to Richard Cook. Ralph Hall and Mary sold land on the Mystic side, Jan. 25, 1649, which did "anciently" belong to John Hall and Richard Kittle. John Hall of Charlestown had lot No. 48 on the Mystic side in 1633. If this date is correct (1633) then that would imply that John Hall had made at least one round trip between Kent and Boston before 1639 when the family emigrated. Or the date could be 1643, which would be more logical.[2]

In 1650, Ralph relocated to the new settlement of Dover, New Hampshire, taking his wife, Mary, and family, with him.[3] Their son, Kingsley Hall was born in Dover in early 1652. While Ralph Hall lived in Dover, he was honored with the rank of Lieutenant of the "Train Band" - local militia defence force - in 1656 and then he became a commissioner of small causes and a town selectman. He sold his premises on Dover Neck on October 19, 1664, to John Reyner, "sometime teacher at Dover."

In 1664, the family moved from Dover about 17 miles south to Exeter, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. Ralph was the delegate from Exeter to the first New Hampshire Assembly that met 1680, and which consisted of eleven men. it is the tradition that he was a brother of Deacon John Hall of Dover NH, and that another brother settled near Boston, where their father lived.[4]

The following is a list of the children of Ralph & Mary Hall:[5]

1. Joseph HALL b: Abt 1645 in Dover, New Hampshire
2. Mary HALL b: 16 Jan 1646 (died as an infant)
3. Mary HALL b: 1648
4. Huldah HALL b: 16 April 1649
5. Ralph HALL b: Abt 1650
6. Samuel HALL b: Abt 1651/52
7. Kingsley HALL b: 1652 in Dover NH
8. Sarah HALL b: Abt 1654
9. Phaltiel HALL b: Abt 1659 in Dover NH

Ralph Hall died in March 1701, at his home in Exeter, New Hampshire.

Why would this not be a PGM profile?

This is not the Ralph who married Mary Chesley according to Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire. Mary Chesley married Deacon Ralph who died in 1706, and was the son of Deacon John Hall, who was this Ralph's brother, it appears. Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire, Volume 3, page 301

I think perhaps there are multiple Mary Chesley's. I know there are multiple Ralph's.

I can't find any evidence for the father of Ralph Hall. Does anybody know of any? If not, I'll go ahead and detach his parents.
