Biography

Herbert (Herries) Herries IIIrd Laird of Terregles Laird of Carlaverock is a member of Herries Clan.

Sir Herbert Herries, Laird of Carlaverock, d. 4 July 1440 was the son of John Herries and Eufemia Lindsay[1] Hebert had four brothers James, Robert, William and Sir John.

He was knighted on the 23rd of May 1424, at the coronation of James I. He also was called Herbert "Heyres" of Carlaverock.

He married Margaret Douglas, daughter of Sir Archibald Douglas, 3rd Earl of Douglas, Earl of Wigtown, Lord of Galloway & Bothwell and Joanna Moray. They had issue, including:

  1. John, his heir[1]
  2. Herbert, curator of John in 1459[1]
  3. William, Rector of Kirkpatrick in 1453[1]
  4. Robert[1]
  5. a daughter, m. Herbert, 1st Lord Maxwell.[1]

He died on the 4th of July 1440, leaving his widow Margaret, daughter of the "Earle Douglas" and four sons.

The Margaret attached here as his wife appears to be an illegitimate daughter of the 1st earl of Douglas, not the Margaret Douglas who is described in the bio above. Mark, could you check and determine whether it is just a case of the wrong wife being attached, or whether two Margarets have been conflated? Thanks.

Herries-38 and Herries-8 appear to represent the same person because: There were several sons of John, including Herbert and Robert. They were not the same people. As eldest son, Herbert succeeded his father. (Robert was probably the 3rd son.) The dates you have attached to "Robert Herbert" are for Herbert, as is the wife, Margaret Douglas. We can separate out Herbert and Robert, including children, or merge them. I favor merging.
