Disputed Origins

Following PGM guidelines, he is being detached from unproven parents John Hiscockes and Mary Franklin, an unsourced claim made on his Find-a-Grave Memorial. The Memorial also gives a birth date of 1 July 1614 in Marlborough, Wiltshire, England that is similarly without source.

There is also no source that he was son of one Luke Hitchcock and Mary Franklin.

Some (IGI) say Luke Hiscocke was christened 17 Mar 1610/11 Melksham, Wiltshire, England, son of Luke Hiscocke.[1] But this is three years prior to his supposed parents' marriage and is in a wholly different part of England than claimed parents.

Others say he was probably born in Fenny Compton, Warwickshire, England.[2] This might be because his wife's supposed family was from that area.

H.G. Cleveland, in 1884, suggested that Luke was probably the brother to Matthias Hitchcock, New Haven, Ct., 1639.[3] Jacobus agreed with him, taking it further and adding a brother Edward Hitchcock:

"Edward and Matthias Hitchcock [took] the [freeman's] oath at the same time [as Luke]. Edward was married by 1638, Matthias perhaps as early, and Luke within four years later. Matthias at least was an original settler, for he signed the fundamental agreement at New Haven, 4 June 1639. It is a reasonable assumption that the three were brothers. At Edward's death, Matthias testified regarding his testamentary wishes, and Matthias and Luke bore the names of two gospel writers. But while Matthias and Edward remained in New Haven until death, Luke shortly removed to Wethersfield."[4]

But Anderson (2001) disagreed with Jacobus about Luke as a brother of these two.[5]

Biography

Luke Hitchcock[6][7] took the freeman's oath in New Haven, Connecticut 1 July 1644.

Soon after removed to Wethersfield, CT.

He served on juries of the Connecticut Court 5 June 1646 and 2 Mar 1647/8.

He was Selectman of Wethersfield in 1653 and 1656.

While the 1884 genealogy states he was a captain at Crown Point in 1645, that's a century off. No record of military service has been found.

In his last year of life, he signed an agreement to remove to Hadley, Massachusetts.

His will was dated 17 Oct 1659 and provides for wife Elizabeth, sons John and Luke, and daughter Hanna, all under 18.

He died 1 Nov 1659,[8] leaving a wife Elizabeth, probably sister of William Gibbons of Hartford, CT.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Luke by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Luke:

Should he really be PGM? Torrey said he and Elizabeth married by 1642, and he took the Freeman's oath in New Haven in 1644. He isn't in the Directory or in Great Migration other than to say there isn't a known relationship between him and Matthew Hitchcock.

If he is, then his wife, Elizabeth Gibbons probably should be as well...?

If he married in January 1641 (which is what this profile says-- is it wrong?), then he was likely in New England by 1640. Just under the wire...

If he really was a brother to the other two, he might have been the youngest, come over with them, but not in any records until he was old enough...

I'd agree. Except I can't find any support for January 1641. The closest I can find is "by 1642". Still, not worth worrying about :)

Beryl thanks the for link to the possible baptism record for him. Since it's behind a paywall, could you also please extract a quote of what the record says? Thanks.

Luke Hiscockes at Melksham also had daughters Millicent bp 8 Jan 1608 and Edeth bp 18 April 1613. Could not find a marriage.

I found a Mary Franklin m to a John Hitchcock in Marlborough - see Hiscockes-1. The profile had incorrect year for the marriage...I suppose rounding up of year ...
