Communication Preferences: I am interested in communicating private message with cousins and anyone else with an interest in genealogy. My family tree is on another website.
I've been doing genealogy for 12 years jumping off from where my mother, who researched for 30 years left off. She had a major brick wall which with the help of a professional genealogist we broke through. I am now trying to break thru a wall on my Hollis side which stops with my 3rd g. grandfather Stephen Hollis married to Margaret Pitts. I have a pretty developed tree on Ancestry but find it's not suiting my needs anymore although I love the site it's gotten frustrating.

Hi Kathleen,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines laid out on that page.

Hi Janet, thank you and thank you for your help. I think this is going to help me be a better researcher. The standards set by Wikitree are wonderful.

Hi Kathleen,

We are so happy you decided to upgrade to the Family Member level.

Please visit our tutorial pages to learn how to use WikiTree: How To Use WikiTree. They will save you time, energy, and frustration as you add your family profiles.

Exploring the site is the best way to learn. One way to do that is to check out the drop-down menus on the top right side of your profile page. Finding a known ancestor and collaborating with the profile manager is another great way to start.

Questions? You can always use the G2G link in the Help Menu to find answers.

Thank you Michele. I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions. Right now I'm trying to get a grip on sourcing with links and navigating around wikitree as well as getting my family on here.

Hi Kathleen

You may notice that FamilySearch.org is a popular source for many types of sources on Wikitree. Not only because you are then directing someone to a source that is not behind a paywall, but also because they do a great job of formatting the information for you. So even, if I have found the information initially on Ancestry, I will try to find it on FamilySearch.org for Wikitree. Just click on citation, if you do that on Ancestry you are still left with a lot of editing. Example:

"United States Census, 1930," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XC33-S2Z : accessed 22 September 2021), Patrick W Dempster in household of Earnest A Dempster, Seattle, King, Washington, United States; citing enumeration district (ED) ED 22, sheet 56B, line 56, family 844, NARA microfilm publication T626 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 2002), roll 2492; FHL microfilm 2,342,226.
