Thomas Hungerford was born about 1695 at William and Mary Parish, Charles County, Maryland. He was a son of William Hungerford and Margaret Barton.[1]
Thomas was only about nine years old when his father, William Hungerford, wrote his will at Charles County. On 22 January 1704/5 (probate 14 March 1704/5), William Hungerford bequeathed two tracts of land, Johnson’s Choice (150 acres) and Smoot’s Choice (250 acres), to four of his sons: William, Thomas, John, and Charles. He directed that if any of the four sons died without heirs, their portion of land should be given successively to his daughters Ann, Elizabeth, or Mary. Another son, Barton, was the eldest son. Barton was bequeathed 28 acres of Hungerford’s Choice.[2] As heir-at-law, Barton may have received additional property, as well. Thomas’ mother soon remarried, to Jacob Miller.[1]
On 29 September 1721, Thomas and his brother, John Hungerford, requested a resurvey of the tracts bequeathed to them (along with two other brothers), by their father, William Hungerford. The tracts, Johnson’s Choice, and Smoot’s Choice were resurveyed, and divided into four equal parts. The resurvey was not recorded until 24 September 1756.[3] In his will, William Hungerford had specified that if any of the four sons died without heirs, their portion would go (in successive order) to William’s daughters Anne, Elizabeth, and Mary. By February 1721/2, Thomas Lucas and his wife Anne (Thomas’ sister) were in possession of one of the four lots, and sold half of the lot (about 45 acres of Smoot’s Choice) to Thomas.[4] Thomas and Anne Lucas later sold their remaining 50 acres of Smoot’s Choice to John Neale and his wife Elizabeth (Thomas’ and Anne’s sister).
Thomas Hungerford married Mary Philpott about 1722, probably at Charles County. This estimate is based on the fact that Thomas and Mary had one child when Thomas died in 1724. Thomas’ first cousin, Elizabeth Barton Smoot, was married to Mary’s brother, Charles Philpott.
On 7 September 1723, Thomas Hungerford and Joseph Chatham were sureties for the bond of James Jones, administrator of Alice Berry.[5]
In 1724, Thomas Hungerford died, intestate, at Charles County. His widow, Mary Hungerford posted bond on 29 June 1724. Her sureties were her brothers, Charles Philpott, and Edward Philpott.[5] On 22 September 1724, an inventory of Thomas’ estate was recorded by Mary Hungerford. The inventory was appraised by Barton Smoot and John Martin. Thomas’ mother, Margaret Miller and brother, Charles, were identified as nearest of kin, and Margaret Miller was the greatest creditor.[6]
After his death, Thomas’ widow remarried. On 23 February 1724/5, William Goodrick and his wife Mary, executrix, provided an account of the estate of Thomas Hungerford.[7] They made a final account of the estate on 8 September 1725.[8] The place of Thomas' burial is unknown.
