Mary Philpott was born about 1702 at William and Mary Parish, Charles County, Maryland. She was the daughter of Edward Philpott and Susanna Posey. On 19 August 1718, Mary was named in the will of her father. She was unmarried but appears to have been of legal age. Mary was bequeathed a woman slave named Pegg, a mare colt, a feather bed, and furniture.[1]
Thomas Hungerford married Mary Philpott about 1722, probably at Charles County. This estimate is based on the fact that Thomas and Mary had one child when Thomas died in 1724. Mary’s brother, Charles Philpott, was married to Thomas’ first cousin, Elizabeth Barton Smoot.
Mary Hungerford posted bond when she was made executrix of the estate of Thomas Hungerford, on 29 June 1724. Her sureties were her brothers, Charles Philpott, and Edward Philpott.[2] On 22 September 1724, an inventory of Thomas’ estate was recorded by Mary Hungerford.[3]
Mary married William Goodrick sometime between 22 September 1724, and 22 January 1724/5 when Mary "Guttack" and her son, William Hungerford, were named in the will of Mary’s sister, Eleanor Philpott. Mary was bequeathed one gown, and one suit of bed clothes.[4] When an account of Eleanor Philpott's estate was recorded on 1 May 1726, it was noted that the legacies for Mary, and William Hungerford, had been delivered to William Goodrick.[5] William Goodrick and his wife Mary, administratrix of Thomas Hungerford, submitted accounts of Thomas’ estate on 18 March 1724/5, [6] and 29 September 1725.[7]
No further evidence was found for Mary. It appears that her son, William Hungerford, died young. William Goodrick was still living in 1753, but no estate records were found for William and it is now known if William and Mary had any children of their own. The date and place of Mary’s burial is unknown.
