William Hungerford was born about 1722 at William and Mary Parish, Charles County, Maryland. He was a son of Thomas Hungerford, and Mary Philpott.
In 1724, William’s father died, intestate, at Charles County. At the time of his death, William’s father possessed two tracts of land—91 acres of Johnson’s and Smoot’s Choice, and 45 acres of Smoot’s Choice. By January 1724/5, William’s mother married, secondly, William Goodrick.
On 22 January 1724/5, William’s maternal aunt, Eleanor Philpott, wrote her will and left legacies to five people, including her sister Mary "Guttack" and William Hungerford (who was bequeathed one ewe and lamb).[1] When an account of Eleanor’s estate was recorded on 1 May 1726, it was noted that the ewe and lamb had been delivered to William Goodrick (William’s step-father).[2]
No further information was found for William. On 22 September 1756, his uncle, William Hungerford Sr. sold to John Hungerford (William’s cousin) the two tracts that had been in possession of William’s father when he died.[3] No deed can be found to prove that William’s uncle purchased the property. Therefore, it appears that William’s uncle came into possession of the land as the heir-at-law of Thomas Hungerford. This implies that William died before he reached his majority and had a legal heir.
