Biography

This child is commonly accepted to be IJtzen. Otherwise IJtzen is the only child without a baptism record and this is the only unnamed child.

IJdsen (IJtsen, IJtzen) Jacobs: Married first Grietje Beerents. His children from this marriage were Stijne IJtzens (April 25 1725), Aaltjen IJtzens (Feb 3 1732), Almt (June 29 1734) and Geertje (June 29 1734).

Secondly he married Jutje (Juttijn) Alberts on Jan 6 1736 in Nieuwe Pekela. Their children were Jacob (Sept 26 1736), Aaltje (Jan 27 1737), Grietien (May 14 1741), Hendrikien IJdsens Piebes (Nov 10 1743), Albert (Aug 6 1747).[1]

The name IJtsen is quite rare, and it seems most of the scribes writing his name didn't know how to spell it. Names he was given include Sijtsse, Itten, Idsen, IJtzen. Therefore his records are very difficult to find.

Itzen Jacobs was a skipper. He would have transported peat fuel out of Pekela to various markets, especially the city of Groningen and various foreign ports - they were going to Copenhagen and Stockholm by 1757, and St. Petersburg in Russia by 1780. It's a job that many men in Pekela area seem to have had - if they weren't harvesting the peat fields in the area. Many of Itzen's grandsons were also skippers. While Pekela wasn't near the sea, several canals were dug up to the Pekel A river and thus the town became an important shipping center. After dropping off their peat, they would often then pick up manure fertilizer to be used in farming in the area. At this point in history everyone also owned their own small farm; only a few in this area made farming a livelihood.

Itse Jacobs was one of many men in a fleet of ships that arrived safely in Texel harbor on July 28 1735, bringing 5 loads of fish from the Straet Davids. They had left June 25. Idse Jacobs arrived in 't Vlie from Koenigsburg, Prussia (now Russia) around Aug 12 1743. This might have been our IJtzen. There was also an Idse Jacobs leaving Texel for the Davis Straits in Labrador on March 19 1749, 3 months after our IJtzen died. So there may have been 2 sea captains with that name. It's also possible we have the wrong date for his death.

Jacobs-5190 and Jacobs-10802 appear to represent the same person because: The unnamed child in Jacobs-5190 was indeed IJdsen in Jacobs-10802. And the child did not die that day: the record indicates the child was baptized that day.

Piebes-4 and Jacobs-5185 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents, same wife. However, the date and place of birth are wrong. It is assumed the child not named in the 1696 baptism record is Ijdsen. The 1725 baptism date of his first child with his first wife shows he wouldn't have been born before 1705.
