William Houston Jeffreys was born on March 25, 1886, in Lawrence, Alabama, to Lutisha Francis Guttery, age 21, and John Wallace Jeffreys, age 23. His family lived in close proximity to his paternal grandparents, aunts and uncles and even the family farm of his future wife. The farm of Elijah Anderson Jeffreys and Margaret (Hocutt) Jeffreys, his father's parents was just next door and that was where he was specifically born, assisted into the world by the hands of his grandmother.
As William grew up his mother often wanted to visit with her parents, Robert Guttery and Gracie Francis (Nesmith) Guttery. In fact, the family history asserts, she wished to visit them so often that eventually John Wallace Jeffreys simply left his wife and child there and returned alone after one too many eighteen mile wagon trips over poor roads.
Evidence that this is true can be found in the 1900 Census where John Wallace Jeffreys is living alone on the farm in Wolf Springs, Lawrence Co. Alabama next to his father and mother’s while Luticia and young William are living with her parents in Russellville, Franklin Co. Alabama.
Mother and child did not return until news reached them sometime before 1910 that John Wallace Jeffreys had been kicked in the head by a horse and lay gravely injured and not expected to recover. Fortunately however, he did and the family was reunited once again.
Surrounding them were several close family members, his grandmother Margaret and her daughters (his aunts) Mary, Sarah, Reuhome and Lucendy; his uncle Andrew Jeffreys and his wife Ida (Rowden) and children; and his aunt Melvina Blankenship with her husband Henry and her children. Next door lived William D Pate and his daughter Hattie Mae Pate, who William would eventually marry.
William Houston Jeffreys married Hattie Mae Pate in Lawrence, Alabama, on July 15, 1914, when he was 28 years old and she was 19 years old.
William registered for the World War 1 draft on September 12, 1918. In it he was described as being tall, of medium build and having brown eyes and light colored hair.
He owned his own farm, planting a diverse crop of corn, cotton, hay and garden vegetables for the family to eat and can for their own use. He raised a small number of cattle, pigs and chicken. There were also dogs and cats around the farm.
They had 13 children in 20 years. He died on March 6, 1972, in Lawrence, Alabama, at the age of 86.
