David Johnston was born in Ireland.

David Johnston was born in Ireland. His date of birth was given as September 1825 on his death registration, and as 26 September 1826 in the 1901 census. He came to Canada in 1838 with his family. [1] When the family went to Amaranth in 1845, he acquired the west half of lot 15 in the 1st concession. David spent the first "winter, which was very mild, attired in moleskin pants, flannel shirt, leather boots and a straw hat, clearing the bush on his new property." He married Mary Ann McBride. [2] [3] The 1861 census said he had 100 acres and a 1 1/2 storey log house. [4] By the time of the 1871 census, he had 200 acres with 2 "barns and stables", 2 "cars, wagons and sleds", 3 " ploughs and cultivators", 1 "horse rake" and 1 "fanning mill." [5] David Johnston's farm was reckoned as the best around.

David died at his farm 08 June 1910. [6] He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Orangeville, Ontario. [7]
