Biography

Formative years

Doctor Leonard George 'Len' Knott was born on 17th June 1920 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. He was the second of three surviving sons, with one sister, of Charles Knott and Martha Henry. [1]

Len's brothers were (Doctor) Charles Henry (1913-88), Eric David Richard (1915-17) and Stanley 'Stan' Glasgow (1926-2021).

Along with his family, Len attended Sunday School and church services at the -Newmarket-Grange Baptist Church (now simply The Grange Baptist), The Grange, Queensland.

Second World War

Len gained a medical degree from the University of Queensland in 1943 and became a medical practitioner. [2]

Served in the Royal Australian Air Force 1943-1946
3rd Personnel Depot

Upon graduation, Len was commissioned as a medical doctor with the rank of Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) for service during the Second World War. [3]

Marriage

Len married Daphne Heathwood, daughter of Roderick and Elsie Heathwood, on 10th Febuary 1945 in Brisbane. [4]

Len's final Army posting was to the staff of the No.3 Personnel Depot, before being discharged on 2nd July 1946. [3] Charles also served as a RAAF medical doctor.

After the War

With the war over, Len commenced general practice in Brisbane. He later specialised as a psychiatrist with rooms on Wickham Terrace, Brisbane.

Len and Daphne made their home at 77 Lamont Street, Wilston, Queensland, where they raised their family of four children:

  1. Doctor Leonard Roderick Charles (c1948-living)
  2. Marilyn Lucielle (c1951-living),
  3. Susan Pamela (1954-living)
  4. Stephen George (1957-living).

Dr Knott was a long-time deacon and secretary of The Grange Baptist Church, and was elected president of the Baptist Union of Queensland (now known as Queensland Baptists).

Retirement and death

Len and Daphne retired to Hervey Bay, Queensland. Aged 79 years, he passed away on 19th February 2000 and is buried in the Hervey Bay Cemetery. [5]

Len was survived by Daphne, their four children, and several grandchildren.
