Biography

JOSEPH CASTILLE is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana, on Plaque 2-R. Listed with him are his wife, Rose Osite Landry, and their children, Pierre, Marguerite, Marie Marthe, and Joseph.[1]

Rose Osithe Landry was born around 1735, perhaps in Grand-Pré, Acadie, Colony of Nova Scotia). Her parents are uncertain. No baptism or marriage records have been found for her.

Osite married Joseph Broussard (born in Village-des-Babin, Pisiguit, Acadie, Colony of Nova Scotia; son of Claude Broussard and Anne Babin) around 1752 in Grand-Pré. Their first child Pierre was born around 1753.

Their children were:

  1. Pierre Paul Broussard (~1753–<1772) [uncertain].
  2. Marguerite Catherine Broussard (~1754–1814)

On 27 October 1755, Joseph and Osithe were deported aboard the Dolphin from Pisiguit to Maryland. There were 230 passengers on board, 56 over capacity. [2][3] On 5 November 1755, the Dolphin and five other ships transporting Acadians took refuge in Boston during a storm. It was reported by authorities that the passengers of the Dolphin were “sick because of the overloading of the ship, 40 persons sleeping on the deck”. [3] They finally disembarked in Maryland on 30 November, 1755. The exiles were greeted with compassion by the Catholics of Maryland. It was decided by the authorities to disperse the Acadians throughout the counties of Maryland. [4]

Osite married Jose Rafael Ignacio Bonventura Castille (born in Port Mahon, Minorca, Spain; son of Miguel Joseph Castell and Antonia Ferrer) around 1759 in Baltimore, Maryland.[5][6][7]

Their known children were:

  1. Marguerite Castille (~1755– ) (Duplicate of Marguerite Broussard?)
  2. Marie Marthe Castille (~1761–1837) .
  3. Joseph Ignace Castille (1764–1833) [8]
  4. Marie-Magdeleine Castille (1768–1840) [9]
  5. Jean Baptiste Castille (~1770–~1830)
  6. Manuel Castille 1774-1809

On July 7, 1763, Joseph Castille and Osithe were recorded in Upper Malborough, Maryland, with children Lamarthe Castille, Paul Brausard, orphan, and Margueritte Brausard, orphan. [10] They were among the Acadians who immigrated to Louisiana after the Seven Year War ended in 1763.[7]

She was ...
Among the Acadians established by the Spanish government at St. Gabriel, 1767. Extant documents indicate that her household included her husband, Joseph Castille, and the following children: Pierre, Joseph, Marguerite, and Marie (Marie Marthe). She is mistakenly [?] identified as Rose in the 1767 census of St. Gabriel. Witnessed her son Jean Baptiste's marriage contract at the Opelousas District, July 16, 1797. (She was illiterate in 1797.) Placed her mark on her son Manuel's marriage contract at the Opelousas District, May 11, 1800.[7]

Rose Osite died "at the residence of her son-in-law, Auguste Bijot," on 15 October 1810 and was buried the next day in St Martinville, St Martin, Louisiana, aged 75.[7][11]

Research Notes

Her baptism is not recorded in the St. Charles aux Mines registers (DOBR, vol. 1-a) covering Grand Pré from 1707 to 1748, though another Osite Landry is there.

I added these parents per Karen Theriot Reader Osite, who also gives her Joseph Broussard as a spouse. Landry Osite also has Joseph Broussard as a spouse but he does not name parents. I've marked the parents uncertain. (Bourque-573 14:07, 4 November 2022 (UTC))

No parents listed for Osithe by Ronnie-Gilles LeBlanc in the article "Pigiguit: l'impact du Grand Dérangement sur une communauté de l'ancienne Acadie."[2]

I have seen her with birth date of 5 May 1733 Grand-Pre Acadia to Jean Bapatiste Landry and Marguerite Melançon but it also lists two other siblings with same birth year?

Hi Colin,

The biography in the Family Search tree gives parents and a date of birth different from the sources provided, and seems like a conflation of different people and dates. 1. The baptism record in Family Search has Osithe born on 5 May 1743, (not 1733), to Jean Landry & Claire LeBlanc, and corresponds to this person: Osithe Landry (1743-). There is no baptism record for an Osithe Landry born on or around 5 May 1733. Osithe of this profile was born around 1735 (no baptism record found), and her parents are uncertain.

I don't see a source for that very precise DOB? It conflicts with a sister born in July of the same year.

HI, Stephanie. Marcel Landry says the Osite who was born on this precise date was daughter of Paul Landry and Marie Josephe Hebert, and she was incorrectly recorded in DOBR as Osite LeBlanc (two errors). I can see that in the book and flagged that one to check.

He also has her married to Pierre Chiasson and then Francois Hebert. KTR confirms this with sources.

He also has the Rose dite Osite Landry who married Joseph Castille (after Joseph Broussard) with no parents. Prob the easiest thing would be to get rid of this birthdate, disconnect her from these parents and then she can stand alone with the Castille spouse and children. We might then need a new Osite b 5/3/1733 dau of Paul and Marie Josephe Hebert if there isn't one already in that family.

Does that make sense? Do you want to work this, or shall I?

Uhh, not really making sense to me. Now it looks like there are 3 Osites? Looking at DOBR, vol. a-1 (1999), I see:

"Osithe Landry (Jean Landry and Claire Leblanc), bn. 5 May 1743, bt. 5 May 1743, spo. Pierre Doucet (s) and Margueritte Landry (SGA-3, 20b)."

1. So that's the other one-- the younger, so called "sister Osite." (Not really a sister to this one). So far so good, and I added her DOBR entry to her profile.

2. But Marcel Landry is saying an Osite Landry is in the DOBR listed as Osite Leblanc: "Osite Leblanc (Paul Leblanc and Marie Joseph Hebert bn. 19 Sept. 1733, bt. 19 Sept. 1733 spo. Paul Hebert and Marie Halen. Note: Osithe in margin (SGA-2, 129)" ?

Uh, I assume the marriage records with Chaisson and Hebert clarify those points that her name and her father's name are really Landry? -- And that Osite is not this profile. (And that DOB is not the "precise date" I was referring to on this profile, which was 5 May 1733-- which I now believe was just a typo carried over from the Osite born in 1743, mistakenly referred to here as "her sister."

3. So now it seems there is a third one, with unknown parents (according the KTR and Encore Ensemble and Marcel Landry) who married Castille and is on the wall of names -- this one.

OK, if you agree with what I finally think I understand, I may as well finish what I started, at least as far as I can!

OK, I made the changes-- removed the wrong parents, and changed the DOB to the one listed by a source, which is cited. That fixes the DBE conflict with the other child born in 1733.

I think those removed parents only had the one Osite, born 10 years later. I added a birth source to her profile. I don't think there is another profile to add to that family. So now we have two correct Osite Landry profiles. I didn't do anything with the 3rd, the Lebanc/Landry one (if there is one).

Terrific, thank you for doing that. I'll look at the Leblanc/Landry one shortly as I am in the Landry section of the DOBR right now.
