Biography

Diarmait mac Máel na mBó (or Dermot) King of Leinster was a contender for High King of Ireland, and became a very powerful influence beyond Ireland. [1] [2]

No dates for the reign of Diarmid (or Dermot), the son of Donnchad (or Donnough) King of Leinster are recorded by the old historians. It seems that his time in power has been absorbed into the records for his father Donnchad [3]

He was one of the the Uí Cheinnselaig, a descendant of Énnae Cennsalach, a King in the 4th century.

His father was Donough Maol-na-Mho (or Donnchad) the cattle rustler. His mother was Aife, daughter of Gilla Pátraic mac Donnchada of Osraige.

He married Derbforgaill, the daughter of Donnchad Mac Briain. [4]

In 1052, Diarmait, "the son of Maol na mBó took the kingship of Dublin by force". [5] [6] [7]

With the Viking, Echmarcach out of the country, Diarmait mac Mail na mBo now had the combined strength of the Dublin Vikings, including their ships, and the men of Leinster to campaign against his enemies, in time becoming overlord of Leinster. His rival for the high kingship of Ireland, was the king of Munster, Donnchad, son of Brian Boru. [8]

Diarmait mac Máel na mBó placed his son, Murchad, as king of Dublin; while he himself, continued to campaign and consolidate his position as ruler of Ireland.

In 1072, "Diarmaid son of Maol na mBó, king of Britons and the Hebrides and Dublin and Mog Nuadata Half was killed by Conchobhar Ó Maolseachlainn in the battle of Odba, and an innumerable slaughter of Foreigners and Leinstermen around him." [9] As recorded in the Annals of the Four Masters, in battle with Conchobhar O'Maeleachlainn, King of Meath, he was "slain and beheaded in the battle of Odhbha, on Tuesday, the seventh of the Ides of February" [10] The Annals of Inisfallen recorded that "Diarmait son of Mael na mBó, king of Laigin and Osraige, was slain in a battle in Mide, viz. by Ua Maíl Shechnaill and Ua Briain, and a large number of the Laigin and foreigners fell together with him, as also Gilla Pátraic Ua Fergail, king of the Fortuatha Laigen. One thousand and seventy-two years from the birth of Christ to the death of Diarmait, son of Mael na mBó." [11]
