Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
William Lilly was a Virginia colonist.

William Lilly

Origin

William was a son of John Lilly, III and his wife, possibly Dorothy Billups, certainly "Miss Billups," who settled at Gloucester County, Virginia. Gloucester was one of the "burned" counties in Virginia, meaning the records were lost.

However, in Records of the Colonial Gloucester County, Virginia compiled by Mrs. Polly Cary Mason, we have the will of Richard Billups, proved February 27, 1752, in which he mentions two of the children of John Lilly: William and Dorothy Lilly.[1] Both William and Dorothy were among the legatees of Richard Billups.[1]

Birth date 1700 is a guess, based on parent's marriage c. 1688.

Marriage and Children

William married to Lucy Unknown, and she married, as her 2nd, to John Billups, Sr.

Death and Legacy

Death date September 12, 1781 and place Gloucester County, Virginia.[2]

ESTATE OF WILLIAM LILLY, dated Gloucester Co. court, 6 Dec. 1781: Ordered that Daniel Williams, Robert Billups, Dawson Eddin and Thomas Billups or any three ... proceed to appraise the negroes and Personal estate of William Lilly, dec'd. in Current money to the best of their Judgement and also Divide the same agreeable to the Testator's will. This inventory indicates Wm. Lilly had 1151 pounds sterling of personal property, including 22 slaves, unnamed here. The heirs are listed as: Lucy Lilly, his widow; James SMITH; Richard BILLUPS, John FOWLER, John LILLY, Thomas LILLY, William A. LILLY, Richard LILLY.

Negroes named in this section are: BECK, HANAH, LIDIA, KITT (to the widow); BOB, WILL (to Richard Billups); CESAR, FRANK (to John Fowler); HAREY, HENNE [sic] to John Lilly; BILLY, JOE to Thomas Lilly; BECK, BETTY to William A. Lilly; FANNY, CHINA to Richard Lilly. This page is dated December 1781. A letter to Richard Billups, who seems to be the executor, from John FOWLER, dated 1 Jan. 1782, asks he send "Nancy's" share. A statement from Richard Lilly indicates Richard Billups was his guardian and has delivered his share of the estate. A court order dated 1794 indicates that Richard Billups died before the lands of Wm. Lilly were divided and instructs others to divide them. Then an 1806 document assigns William Lilly's estate as follows: Widow (unnamed) her dower; to James SMITH in right of his wife ELIZ.A; to Richard Billups in right of his wife LUCY; to John FOWLER in right of his wife ANN; to John Lilly, to Thomas Lilly, to William A. Lilly, to Richd Lilly.(It would appear that after the death of Richard Billups, executor, another Richard Billups handled this estate

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:
