Robert Lyman immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
Robert Lyman was a son of Richard and Sarah Osborne,[1] of Hartford who was baptized at High Ongar, in 1580, and came with Eliot, in the “Lion,” bringing five children with him.[2][3][4] Robert was the youngest, born in Sep 1629,[5] m. Hepzibah Bascom on 5 Nov. 1662 at Northampton.[6]
Robert was a signor of the Newark Covenant as such, was instrumental in the formation of the New-Ark (later Newark) settlement. Surveys were made for him in 1675 in Newark, New Jersey, but in 1684 when he sold to Jasper Crane, he was of Massachusetts.[2]
Robert must not have stayed in Newark or traveled between Northampton and Newark as he is mentioned in Northampton records in 1669 town records,[7] but continues to appear in Newark records for years.[8] He is listed as receiving one of the first land grants on what is now known as Hawley Street.[9]
A hill, on which he died in Northampton, is still named Robert’s Hill. John, brother of Robert married Dorcas Plum, of Branford, removed to Northampton, and had six sons and four daughters.[2]
