Biography

Marion Francis Mathews was born on 25 May 1877 in Will County, Illinois. He was the son of John Matthews and Pholena (Godden Matthews) Matthews.[1]

Around 1898, he was married to Ellie Stevenson.[2][3] Their children were: Hallie, Francis Delilah Matthews, Norah Matthews and Martha Addie Matthews.[4] He and Ellie apparently divorced after the birth of Martha in 1910, but remarried Ella May Stevenson on 29 March 1927 in Delaplaine, Greene County, Arkansas after both had had marriages to other people.[5] In 1930 they were in Evening Shade, Greene County, Arkansas.[6]

Marion married Iva May Roberts on 2 April 1915 in Monette, Craighead, Arkansas.[citation needed] The couple had one child: Iva Louise Matthews.

In 1918 Marion was living in Okmulgee, Oklahoma where he registered for the World War I draft. His daughter, Hallie Phillips was named as his nearest relative in Paragould, Arkansas. He was described as medium in height and build with dark hair and blue eyes. [7]

In 1942 he remarried to Emma Dora Fears nee Slaton in Randolph County, Arkansas.[8]

Marion died at the age of 66 on 26 May 1943 in Beech Grove, Greene County, Arkansas. per obituary. He was buried in Jones Ridge Cemetery, Delaplaine, Greene County, Arkansas.[9]

"Marion Francis Mathews, aged 66, died at 7:30 yesterday morning at his home on Beech Grove, route one, following an illness due to heart trouble and dropsy. He was a native of Greene County. Funeral services and burial were conducted at two this afternoon at the Jones Ridge Cemetery.

"Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Emma Dora [Slaton Fears] Mathews; four daughters, Mrs. [Frances Mathews] Clarence Gray, Mrs. [Martha Addie Mathews] [Leslie Herman "Ted" Holland] Ted Huffman and Mrs. [Nora Mathews] Arman Busby of Beech Grove, and Mrs. [Ivy Louise Matthews] [John Earl] Louie Reed of Picher, Okla. One brother, Ira Mathews, of Jonesboro. 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. "
